Gravestones of New England is a great site for people interested in the artwork of old gravestones. There are several postings on Suffield gravestones.

A double headstone for Jonathan and Mary Sheldon, 1769 and 1768, at West Suffield Cemetery in Suffield, Connecticut. The stone features a lengthy inscription describing their marriage, but at no point does it actually mention Mary by name, instead simply describing them as “Jonathan Sheldon & Consort.”

The inscription describes them as having been “Parents, Grand Parents, & great Grand Parents of 166,” and the epitaph ate base of the stone reads:

~The happy Pair~
In Love they liv’ d, in Peace they Di’d
The various Scenes their graces tri’d
Their Faith, their Patience, & their Love
Have took their flight to realms above.
They run the round of threescore Years
In happy Harmony
And this engrav’d upon this stone
In gratefull Memory

The stone was carved by Ebenezer Drake.

John Trumbull had roots in Suffield. There was a Trumble Oak (a variant spelling of the family name) in Suffield on property where Trumbull’s great-grandfather lived. Shown here is a page from Laurie Tavino’s book, “Suffield’s Old Bridge Neighborhood" with its picture.
