It’s here…we are ONE DAY AWAY from the season opening of the Door County Granary!!! ⌛

Over the past 4 days, we’ve shared 4 distinct ways to become a thread woven into the tapestry of Door County history. Our final option is a biggie…

Option #5 is VISIT!

What better way to get a feel for Door County history than to literally step into it? The Granary is truly a one-of-a-kind space and you can’t truly appreciate it until you experience it. Starting TOMORROW, the Granary will be open 10am-3pm, Wednesday to Sunday through October. Entry is FREE and the building is easily accessible by car, foot, or even boat at a prime location (72 E. Locust Ct.). Come learn how a grain elevator works, marvel at architecture that has survived 125 years and a move across the channel, and enjoy scenic views of the waterfront. Don’t just trust us – see for yourself what all the fuss is about. And once you’re hooked, come back and revisit the other 4 ways you can support the Granary and play a key role in preserving the unique character and history of charming Door County! 🌞

Can you feel it?! Only 2 days remain until the Door County Granary opens for the season! 🌞

We’ve already shared 3 incredible, easy ways you can champion Sturgeon Bay’s legacy, but believe it or not, there’s still 2 to go!

Option #4 is SHARE!

If there’s one thing we’ve learned on the journey to save the Granary, it’s that we have power in numbers. With so many scenic stops and commendable causes in Door County, it can be tough to stand out. Spreading the word about the last interpreted wooden grain elevator remaining on the Great Lakes helps us attract visitors, volunteers, and donations. So go ahead and hit that “Share” button, bring a friend to your next drop-in at the Granary, or just tell someone new about the great work being done on Sturgeon Bay’s West Waterfront. When it comes to telling this place’s stories, we truly believe that the more, the merrier!

The historic Door County Granary opens for the season on Wednesday, May 13. Open hours continue through October, Wednesday - Sunday, 10 AM - 3 PM. Visit to explore the only restored grain elevator on the Great Lakes and learn its significance to Door County's agricultural economy.

Tick, tock…we are now only 3 days away from the Door County Granary’s season opening! ⏲

We are halfway through our 5 ways in 5 days and #3 is a fun one…

Option #3 is BECOME A MEMBER!

There is no better way to etch your name in the annals of Sturgeon Bay than to become an annual member of the Sturgeon Bay Historical Society. Membership takes you a step beyond a one-time donation to become a staple contributor to the cause. In the Society’s decade of operation, members have allowed us to accomplish large-scale, long-term projects including the preservation and restoration of the Granary – a complex but vital effort to honor Sturgeon Bay’s historical roots. Learn more on our website (link below) about how you can join the ranks of Door County’s most dedicated stewards of history.

The countdown continues…4 days until Door County Granary’s season opening! ⏰

In the 5 days leading up to the grand opening, we are highlighting 5 ways YOU can become a part of Door County’s illustrious history.

Option #2 is DONATE!

The Sturgeon Bay Historical Society is a 501(c)3 dedicated to preserving Sturgeon Bay’s living history and as a non-profit, we rely on the generosity of our supporters to achieve that mission. Our current campaign, “Get to the Top,” seeks to restore the uppermost levels of the Granary and open them for public viewing. There are many ways to donate to the Society and ALL are tax-deductible. Learn more about the wide variety of options on our website (link below) or drop by the Granary next week to check out our scale architectural model and leave some cash in person!

Cue the countdown…Door County Granary’s season opening is just 5 days away!! ⏳

In our second season, we look forward to continuing to share Sturgeon Bay’s unique history with residents and visitors alike. To get ready for our May 13th kick-off, we’re spending the next 5 days highlighting 5 easy ways that you – yes, YOU! – can help support our mission.

Option #1 is VOLUNTEER!

We are seeking museum docents to steward the Granary’s storied legacy and orient visitors to the historic building. Docents do not need experience, just a passion for history, storytelling, and connecting with other people. 2.5-hour shifts are available Wednesday-Sunday through October. Check out our volunteer page (link below) or reach out to the Museum Coordinator, Sarah Sherwood, directly at [email protected] to learn more and get started.

And be sure to stay tuned in the upcoming days for more ways to help bring Door County’s history to light!

This is the last week to experience La Dallman Architects's Granary exhibit "Shifting Reuse and Repair," a part of the SHIFT: Architecture in Times of Radical Change exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center. Nicole FINALLY made it last weekend and couldn't help but share some insight with visitors touring the space. LA DALLMAN created a fragment of a nearly to scale grain bin that exists in the upper levels of the Door County Granary. Excerpt from the exhibit's narrative: "This installation contemplates emerging, quasi-preservation strategies to transform derelict buildings." Free admission to the exhibition through February 28.

How cool would it be if we can bring the exhibit to Sturgeon Bay?!

Can't make it to the Chicago Cultural Center? You can find the telescoping model that accompanies the exhibit right here at the Door County Granary. We open for the season on May 13 but until then you can view the Granary's Raymond F. and Eleanor A. Pesch Granary Restoration Fund Telescoping Model through the windows along the Granary's waterfront terrace. The model explains the various levels of the historic Teweles & Brandeis Grain Elevator and the proposed design to provide public access to the building's main exhibit inside the upper levels of the 1901 grain elevator.
