Streatorland Historical Society Museum Streatorland Historical Society Museum originated in 1975 as the Streator Heritage Association. In 1 We have dresses from our past, as well as war uniforms.

All of these have been given to us by members. Other memories of our past include the Zouave displays from World War II: the Miller Cigar Store photo album, Honey Boy Evans, and Scharfenberg's "Streator Sidelights". We have thousands of pictures, including some of old baseball and basketball teams of our past, including the 1983 State Champion Girls Softball Team. In our office we have cemetery records, obituaries, Streator and Woodland High School yearbooks, Streator City Directories, files of Streator businesses, Streator plat books, and many LaSalle County and Livingston County history books. On the grounds of the museum is a restored 1954 Burlington Northern caboose. It is representative of the rich railroad history in Streator. The caboose was a gift from the railroad and was permanently situated in 1986. The Jim Beavers Annex is located behind the main building and serves as additional display room for our many artifacts. We are always interested in donations to Streatorland History and we encourage group and individual tours free of charge. We publish a monthly newsletter for over 550 members in 30 states. The cost of the yearly membership from January 1 - December 31 is:
Senior Citizen Couple $15
Senior Citizen $12
Couple (under 62) $20
Single (under 62) $15
Heritage Membership $100 (or more)

With today being National Medal Of Honor Day I’d like to recognize Streator’s own Orion P. Howe. Howe earned the award due to his actions on May 19, 1863 during an assault on the fortifications of Vicksburg, MS. He was a 14 yo drummer boy in the 55 th ILL. When he heard a group of infantry from the 55th. Were pinned down and out of am******on, he and 2 other drummers boys dropped their drums and headed to the front where they crawled around the battlefield getting am******on from the dead and wounded soldiers to take to the pinned down soldiers. Col Malmberg ordered them from the field, but to find General Sherman to let him know they need am******on. The three boys ran across the field to find Sherman. Two of them were shot and killed almost immediately, Howe was shot through his left thigh and crawled off the field. Once at a safe distance he got up and limped to Sherman where he gave the message about the need for am******on. Sherman was impressed with boys courage and the fact the remembered that they needed a special caliber of am******on, caliber 54.
After the war Howe and his brother both settled in Streator where they spent most of their lives. Orion became a dentist and saddle maker. Though his wife and daughter are buried in Riverview Cemetery, Orion is interred at the National Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri. Orion P. Howe is recognized as the youngest recipient of the MOH, at 14 years old. Happy MOH day Orion!
