Today we are traveling to California. Explore three of The Getty's most popular current exhibitions, or delve into some art history.

One of The Getty's exhibitions is "Käthe Kollwitz: Prints, Process, Politics". Did you know The Benton Museum has a large collection of Kollwitz prints and drawings donated in 1965 by Dr. Walter Landauer, an internationally recognized geneticist and UConn professor?

Visit museums or art galleries and you may live longer, new research suggests

This is a great new year's resolution. Visit more museums and live longer!

Looking for a good healthy gift? Visit museums with family and friends during the holidays, or give gifts of museum membership. You will be giving your loved ones a gift of longevity.

Many museums are open through the holidays. (It is recommended to check with their websites before you go).

A trip to the theater, museum or art gallery could help you live longer. And the more often you get that culture fix the better, a new study suggests.

This exhibition celebrates UConn Professor Emeritus of Printmaking Gus Mazzocca’s gift to the Benton of more than 150 prints by Polish artists. The prints came to Mazzocca through the exchange program that he established in 1984 with the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Poland. Produced largely during the 1970s and 1980s, the prints provide an opportunity to sample artistic production in Krakow during the Cold War, when Poland became a satellite state of the Soviet Union. The exhibition’s title, presented in both Polish and English, suggests how printmaking helped artists involved in the exchange transcend cultural and political barriers to find common ground. The exhibition is a collaboration with the Department of Art and Art History; UConn Global Affairs; and Archives and Special Collections, UConn Library.

An interesting article that takes us back to an exhibition we had 2015 called "Sacred Sisters: In Praise of Art & Poetry" with artist Holly Trostle Brigham. Throughout history women have been involved in making and collecting art but were systematically excluded from the records of art history. It is wonderful that some of them are finally being recognized.

This exhibition at the Benton Museum is featured on the front page of NARM's (North American Reciprocal Museums) website and social media sites today.

Mark your calendar to see the exhibition from August 23 - October 13.

The opening reception on Thursday, September 5 from 4:30 - 7. From 5 - 6:30 enjoy music by performers from the musical FELA! playing a variant of Fela's music. Fela aKUsTic is a radical reinterpretation of the music of Afrobeat creator Fela Kuti. Fela's 15+ piece orchestra has been stripped down to a 3-piece band featuring: Duain Richmond (who played the role of Fela on Broadway) on vocals, Ricky Quinones (from the Broadway musical) on guitar, and Domenica Fossati, multi-instrumentalist and singer.

Fela Kuti was from Nigeria- where the majority of the collection of the "Souvenirs d'Afrique" exhibition was compiled in the early 1960s. Fela's popularity peaked in the 1970s but he started playing in the 60s in the Nigerian Afrobeat and highlife scene in Lagos.

SOUVENIRS D’AFRIQUE: Arts of Africa from the Collection of Janine and Josef Gugler
On view through October 13, 2019
The William Benton Museum of Art
University of Connecticut
Storrs, Connecticut
www.thebenton.org

This exhibition features works recently donated to the Benton from a large collection of African art and material culture acquired beginning in the 1960s by University of Connecticut Professor Emeritus of Sociology Josef Gugler and his wife Janine Gugler. Many of the works were collected in situ during Professor Gugler’s field research in Nigeria, including a number of Igbo masks and sculptures purchased directly from the artists. Other works represent objects types and styles typical of works available in the African art market during the mid to late 20th century. The exhibit explores issues of indigenous cultural meaning, aesthetic value, authenticity, and the history of American and European interest in the arts of Africa.
