Deer Isle Granite Museum

This week is the last chance during regular fall hours to see this year's two new exhibits: on the John F. Kennedy Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery, quarried, shaped, and inscribed right here in Stonington; and our new interactive storytelling kiosk, at which you can listen to and watch as island elders describe their own experiences quarrying and living in a quarry culture.

The Kennedy Memorial's inscriptions on Deer Isle Granite are from his inaugural 1961 speech. We have them posted as part of the exhibit. They include the famous, "Ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country" as well as other inspirational text.

The Museum's last regular day is Saturday, October 10 from 12 - 4 p.m.

The Museum is also a great off-season place for educators and learners of all ages! We love to host school trips and groups. Just email us at [email protected] to schedule your trip between now and June. Both exhibits stay in place over the winter.

More than 1,500 granite blocks quarried on Crotch Island became part of John F. Kennedy’s memorial gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery. When you live on the rock, you live by the rock.

Stonington still has a working granite quarry! Last night one of our board members took these photos as one of the giant granite blocks was trucked off island from where it lands by barge at Webb's Cove.

Join us for boat trip out to Stonington's working quarry, and a tour guided by the quarry owners and workers, on August 14-15. All proceeds benefit the Museum, which is a nonprofit organization.
