Cuban Mahogany (west indies mahogany) is one of the most sought-after woods in the world for furniture and instrument making, but due to overharvesting the wood has not been commercially available since the 1920s. It is prized for its incredible workability, dimensional stability, density, color, grain structure, bug resistance, and finish quality. This rare combination of desirable features led to a boom in Cuban Mahogany furniture and instruments between the 1880s-1920s. It became essential to the English and French furniture trades. The finest antique furniture styles - Chippendale, Federal, Sheraton, and Empire - all heavily relied on Cuban Mahogany. This popularity, plus wasteful uses in its native land like railroad ties, fence posts, and even firewood, led Cuban Mahogany to commercial extinction. In 1946 Cuba banned all exports of the lumber.
