Squirrels, once abundant in Erath County, had been hunted out for years. They were so rare that it made the newspaper in 1921 when one was seen in the city limits of Stephenville, it was shot and eaten before it was known to have been a pet of a local physician.

There was a series of articles in the Stephenville Tribune in 1924 about the murder of a mother and her baby at McDow's Hole just after the Civil War, near Alexander. The story at the time was that Indians had killed them. Joe Fitzgerald, who owned a nearby nursery published a series of ghost stories about the murder to draw interest to the area. W.H. Fooshee, who came to the area in 1871 saw the articles and answered in another article that this was the first he had heard of the ghost. He noted that the water hole on Green Creek was a gathering place during Indian raids. In 1925 an article appeared signed "The Ghost" saying that the murders were not done by Indians as most people at the time believed, but by white men. He said that two of the men were still alive and one of them still lived in Erath County.

In 1885 the Wallace and Co. Circus came to Stephenville with such attractions as " a veritable revival of classic Roman sports, breath-abating feats in mid-air, beautiful bevies of female riders, wild beasts in vivid groups." By the end of the performance 19 men had been arrested for fighting.

For years Erath prohibitionists had been campaigning to vote the county dry. Each year the Thurber vote blocked the effort. In 1903 W.K. Gordon. The "King of Thurber," arranged with county commissioners to find reason to exempt the Thurber vote and Erath County was voted dry. As Mingus was over the county line, that area became the only source of alcohol for decades.
