We are so grateful to have Yvonne Johnson as our head teacher and the organizer of our yearly Swedish school. For 30 years, Yvonne has created a unique cultural learning experience for children. While there have been many volunteers over the years assisting, Yvonne has been here since the beginning. In fact, there would be no Swedish School without her. After graduating from Augustana College with a bachelor’s degree in music, she went to New York City to study singing. She taught in New Jersey & Long Island for a short time before continuing her education at Columbia University where she earned her master’s in music education. She taught music at Baldwin, NJ, and then went to Germany where she taught at Ramstein Air Base. While there, she travelled to all the European countries. After returning to the U.S., she received a position at St. Louis Park in Minneapolis, teaching preschool through sixth-grade music. While in Minneapolis, she learned Swedish at the American Swedish Institute. Twenty-five years later, she returned to her family farm in Bethesda, Iowa. It was at that time she approached SHCC about starting a Swedish School based on the one at the American Swedish Institute…and the rest is history. Yvonne had also regularly visited Sweden to study singing in Stockholm under Jan Eyron, a well-known classical Swedish musician. She is also the organist at her church and started a Recorder Consort in 1995. We are extremely blessed to have such a talented lady teaching our children every year. We cannot thank her enough! Happy Thirtieth Swedish School, Yvonne!
