Saif Azzuz (), featured in our upcoming exhibition, “California Currents,” is the new Doerr Visiting Artist at Stanford University for the 2026–27 academic year!

The Doerr Visiting Artist Program, co-sponsored by Stanford Arts () in partnership with the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability’s Art and Sustainability Program (.doerr), augments scientific discovery, creative expression, and interdisciplinary thinking by establishing a unique opportunity for artists working at the intersection of art and sustainability.

You can see a commissioned artwork by Saif featured in our upcoming exhibition, “California Current: Art and Histories from the Bay Area”, a contribution to the Further Triennial, opening in just two weeks on October 29th!!

Thank you, Jerron Herman!

For our “Forms & Frequencies” series,
New York-based dancer, choreographer, and writer Jerron Herman (Jerron) brought “Temporary Body,” which centers around disability aesthetics, Blackness, masculinity, and bodily interaction, specifically inviting the audience to become an active part of the performance space. Attendees helped create unique adornments for Herman’s garment before joining a procession and witnessing a solo dance performance.

Presented in conjunction with “Carolyn Lazard: Long Take,” the performance explored the connections between movement, writing, accessibility, and collaborative art-making.

What a fantastic Thursday evening! Thank you to everyone who participated!

“California Current: Art and Histories from the Bay Area,”OPENING OCTOBER 29!

Through its more than 60 works — many on view for the first time, “California Current” explores Bay Area history, art, and artists over the past century.

Titled after the major cold-water current that runs the length of the West Coast of North America, “California Current” brings together paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photographs, and time-based media by Bay Area artists from the twentieth century to the present.

Presented as part of the Further Triennial (Further Triennial), this exhibition illuminates an inspiring web of friendships, mentorships, and creative exchange that sustained Bay Area artists through the decades, and features works by artists including Pacita Abad, Saif Azzuz (Libyan-Yurok), Robert Bechtle, Bernice Bing, Kota Ezawa, L. Frank (Tongva, Rarámuri), Lynn Hershman Leeson, Hung Liu, Mildred Howard, Amalia Mesa-Bains, among others.

Dates: October 29, 2026–October 23, 2028

We recently celebrated the opening of "Solid Pictures: Photosculpture and the Making of Modern Likeness"

Curated by Patrick R. Crowley, the exhibition explores the largely overlooked experiments of French artist and inventor François Willème, who in the 19th century used photography, projection, and mechanical instruments to create three-dimensional portraits.

Though Willème’s photosculpture was commercially unsuccessful, his experiments helped lay the groundwork for technologies that are ubiquitous today—including scanning, machining, and 3D printing.

Thank you to all our members who attended this members-only event. Members got to enjoy great conversation, edible treats, refreshing cocktails, and, of course, the first look at our newest exhibition, "Solid Pictures."

"Solid Pictures" is now on view through January 18, 2027, in the Pigott Family Gallery.

What a night. 🌙✨

On the evening of Saturday, September 19, in the Rodin Garden, under the moon and stars, we hosted Museums by Moonlight, a gala benefiting the Cantor Arts Center and Anderson Collection at Stanford University.

This event, which only happens every two years, was made even more meaningful as we honored artist-educator Ruth Asawa on the centenary of her birth.

This event supports the exhibitions, education, and programming that bring art to our community throughout the year. We’re grateful for the generosity of the Bay Area art community—and for everyone who helps keep great art and programming alive at Stanford. We’re especially grateful to our event chair, Samantha Wang, and our w**e sponsor, The Donum Estate The Donum Estate, for helping make the evening possible.

“Solid Pictures: Photosculpture and the Making of Modern Likeness” is NOW OPEN!

This major exhibition, curated by Patrick Crowley, , Associate Curator of European Art, sheds light on a 3D modeling process called photosculpture, developed by the young artist and inventor François Willème in Paris as early as 1859.

Dates: September 17, 2026–January 18, 2027

The museum is free and open to all.
