My job is to pay attention to pictures. Often it reveals important things. An image in which the women is looking at you straight on, albeit seductively, and the man’s head is tilted in submission constitutes a significant cultural shift, especially when placed side by side and from a major brand. It’s subtle but when you take the time to look, you can learn a lot.

Yikes. I don’t like heights, but the views from Cedric’s Cafe into Frieze Galleries is worth the risk. It is the last day at Frieze, come on over to The Shed at Hudson Yards and have a look for yourself.

Documenting your art well is a sign of respect. Whether you are the artist or collector, it is important to honor your investment with proper care. And yes it takes time and thoughtful effort. Working with photographer, John Carlano also makes it a pleasure.

I was already enjoying this sunny and slightly breezy morning in Philadelphia when I pulled up to the Crane Arts Building to see Roberto Lugo’s mural across the street on the side of The Clay Studio. Philly Strong indeed. And if you don’t know The Crane Arts Building, The Clay Studio or Roberto Lugo, check them all out. # cranesrts

I was struck by this post from Joseph Campbell IG. Campbell, of corse, is focused on the particulars of the systems or myths. My big concern is the end of that first sentence: system of images. I’ve said it once and a million times: since the mind thinks in pictures, it is in our interest to at least be mindful about what those images are and ask: how do we control them.

Plato (shown here in the Asisbiz Statue) is famous for his condemnation of art and especially of art for the masses. Scholars since the 3rd c BCE have been discussing why exactly. Among the reasons was that art is extremely tricky by definition and most people don’t understand it’s impact enough to safely consume it. Art has only gotten trickier and more complex since BCE. It is imperative that we continue to study and educate ourselves on how it functions. Have a think about it and please consider donation to my Teacher’s College Go Fund Me to support me and my cohort of art educators to explore these issues in the classroom, in the studio and in life. Having just returned from a fabulous weekend in Charleston, SC for the Credit One Charleston Open, I have been remiss in not posting anything on Charleston native, Shepard Fairey. Fairey came to fame with his Obama Hope poster. But once you cue in on his distinctive style, you won’t miss it even when hiding in a quiet parking lot off King Street. He has murals all over Charleston. So when in that delightful city, keep a look out.

The NY Times finally hit the nail on the head regarding the issues with not only AI but the majority of image making today, which in case anyone forgot is called art. We don’t believe what we are seeing. And there is a good reason for that: the images are complex and often don’t make sense. The Pope in a white puffer is the least of it because when applied to the Pope or Johnson we take a second look. But if my hands looked like Johnson’s you might just ingest the image and move on to the next, not consciously thinking twice, which may be ok for a brain with decades of established inner data but for a child? What are we teaching them?

As Sunday is Easter I am sharing a work in progress from my new series: Screen Shots. The title is: Day 7: Jesus Scrambled Eggs. Before anyone takes offense, this piece is not about Jesus but about the complexity of the images we ingest from our screens and the scrambling effect on our minds. Happy Holidays to all celebrating renewal and commitment to leading a good life.

Kitchen Basics installation view. I have been sharing my Kitchen Basics individually. But the intention is to have a few in the cupboard for use when the need arises. The fact that everyone resonates with a different piece validates the exercise and reminds us of our uniqueness. See these pieces and my Screen Shot paintings this summer in exhibitions at The Painting Center July 18-Aug 12 and The Macy Gallery July 26-Aug 10. And please consider donating to my TC cohort’s GoFundMe found in the link.

New Kitchen Basic: The Hook. I’ve been thinking a lot about the brilliance of the hook. It is so simple and generally it is our own struggle against the hook that keeps us ensnared. At the same time, with a deep breath and a bit of surrender we can just as easily slip the hook and keep in swimming. It’s Monday. The start of a new cycle is a great opportunity to observe where we get hooked and choose to take another route.

My fabulous cohort and I from Teachers College are preparing for our Capstone Exhibition in July. Part of our mission is to take our work out of the classroom and into the community at large. In order to do so we need to raise money for gallery rental etc. Read all about it and please consider making a donation to our Go Fund Me. And above all mark your calendars to see us at our opening at The Painting Center in NYC on July 20th. https://gofund.me/d5b331e2

I spent the morning looking at Rubens in The Courtauld and with the greatest of respect, I am now thinking of him as Peter Paul Ribbons. I never noticed how ribbony his gestures are. There is something positive in that for me, it lightens up all the Greek Gods and Christian Saints.

Kitchen Basics: Scrambled Eggs, Linocut Monoprint, 2023, 11 x 14 inches Framed $500. If it kind of looks like a brain, that applies too. Sometimes mixing things up is invigorating and helpful, other times, a mess. Almost everything has a variety of ways of being perceived.

Now on view at The Shed in Hudson Yards, NYC is The Yanomami Struggle. Presented by FondationCartier and Curated by IMS, there is a wealth of creativity here. Claudia Andujar’s photographs and her care for the Yanomami people provide the basis of the exhibition but there are intriguing drawings and paintings by the Yanomami as well. Make sure to get to the backs rooms showing work by Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe. And note the gentleness of Fondation Cartier’s support.
