We’re so excited to have artist Maria Fee (Maria Fee ) joining us these next couple weeks as she creates a version of her work Permeable Frontiers for Intersect’s fall show, Seen and Unseen opening in September.

Part of the piece requires some community participation, and so Maria will lead a workshop here at Intersect on Saturday, August 29 starting at 10:30am

Maria will lead workshop participants in creating three-dimensional paper sculptures, some of which will be displayed as part of her final installation.

The project investigates and imagines what home, shelter, or sanctuary look and feel like. It helps us imagine or express what it means to be without home, or make a new home. Together we will play, reflect, and envision a city, a new creation made from and stimulated by diverse peoples and cultures.

Intersect is delighted to announce Maria Fee (Maria Fee ), an artist and academic from California, joining us for a three week residency.

Maria will be creating an installation for our fall exhibition Seen and Unseen. She will lead a community workshop to create works for that installation, and she will be giving an artist lecture this coming Sunday at a collaborative event between Intersect and our partner gallery, Mezzo Gallery at the Bridge House .

Present an artist lecture with artist in residence Maria Fee entitled: “(Spirit) The Unseen Person: Contemporary Art as Cultural Vessels of the Spirit.”

Featuring the works of Hispanic/Latin@ artists and theologians, the discussion highlights a politics of representation, and art’s power to elevate or exclude. It covers the Spirit’s reviving force mediated through artmaking, rituals, and other aesthetic and embodied experiences. It explores art participates as a vessel for God’s empowering presence via the Spirit found in the ethnic/racial other, the discarded, the beleaguered, the seen and unseen.

Never Gonna Give You Up - Call for Art for our Cabinets of Curiosity

Even if you’re not sentimental about objects, chances are you have something in your home that you don’t use or display, but also can’t get rid of: the tiny, faded newborn hat that came home with you from the hospital, the rubber dinosaurs you loved and knew all the names of in 2nd grade, the middle school sports trophies you’re still a little proud of, or the cross stitch with your name on it that your grandma spent many hours making for your high school graduation. Every time you get out that box, you go through it, relive a few pieces of your personal history, think to yourself, “What should I do with this stuff?” and then reconfigure the careful tetris of the objects and close it back up for the next ten years.

There’s certainly merit to reexamining our relationship with stuff—curbing our appetite for consumption and reminding ourselves that our deepest satisfactions don’t lie in trendy home updates or the newest water bottle fad. But it’s worth recognizing too that our tendency toward overconsumption and wastefulness is more often a result of viewing material things as having too little value rather than too much, as disposable rather than useful, as burden rather than gift.

This exhibition in miniature is a celebration of that which is, perhaps, functionally useless, but somehow precious. We may have a variety of feelings about the things we’ve saved: tenderness, frustration, guilt, gratitude, obligation, but probably not apathy. So, for once in their long material lives, let’s bring them out of the boxes and into the light. Chances are you have something like that. Chances are, it has a story to tell.

Objects will be displayed in a set of historic cabinets. Any 2-D, 3-D, time-based, or digital work will be considered.

New workshop happening next week!

Join visiting artist Mami Takahashi for an introduction to Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics. More than a repair technique, Kintsugi offers a way of thinking about care, impermanence, and the ongoing relationships we have with the objects and communities around us.

The evening will begin with a conversation inspired by Intersect’s Dream Street exhibition, exploring themes of repair, memory, and community care. Participants will then learn a beginner-friendly Kintsugi process and repair a prepared ceramic piece to take home.

No prior experience is necessary. All materials will be provided. This class is suitable for participants ages 16 and up.

When: Wednesday, June 10, 2026 | 5:30pm - 8:30pm

5:30–6:00 PM: Gallery conversation on repair, care, and community

6:00–8:30 PM: Hands-on Kintsugi workshop

Class Fee: $20 - proceeds from this class will be used to help prep Intersect’s lower lot on Jefferson to become a splash pad and play area for our community!

The ideal candidate will combine scientific expertise, practical skills, and social warmth to ensure the health and beauty of all plant life while engaging volunteers and community in this corner of creation we are privileged to steward.

Holy Cross has an established and ever evolving gardens featuring 10 different topographies and level 1 arboretum with a focus on native plantings and wildlife.

Intersect Arts Center has large rain gardens, community vegetable garden beds, and 1.3 acres of wild potential waiting to be nurtured into a space of community respite, health, and beauty. Intersect’s property has significant opportunities for design ideas incorporating public art, play, and education.

The ideal candidate will have a heart of kindness, generosity, and collaboration, attuned to not only care for plants, but holistic care for people and place in this unique urban context.

This list is a general outline of responsibilities and is not limited to the following:

Plant Care & Maintenance
Pest & Disease Management
Soil and Nutrient Management
Landscape Design & Installation
Technical Operations
Record Keeping
Education
Facility Support
Public Art Management Support

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Botany, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Certified Arborist, Certified Master Gardener, and Certified to Spray Herbicides a plus
Prior experience with 3 references
Knowledge of native plants, rain gardens, vegetable gardens, natural pest management, and soil science.
Ability to lift up to 50lbs and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Generous communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
Must be interested in working with a Lutheran church community

Pay: $40,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
