Hey friends! We are closed today for the holiday weekend, so here’s the next installment of asking some of our artists about their viewing/listening habits while making art. Today we talked with JT Walls aka jt walls whose vintage horror/b-movie-inspired work is filled with incredible texture and detail.

Do you listen to music or watch tv while you create? Why or why not?

“I do both while I’m working. It usually depends on the type of painting I’m doing and where I want my headspace to be.
If I’m doing my paintings with a lot of hand lettering I’ll usually watch old horror and sci Fi movies. Sometimes I’ll get inspired by a font or color palette from a movie poster and I’ll watch that movie while I work. I like the older stuff because the sound design is great for not really watching the screen. Theater of the mind!”

What do you generally listen to (or watch) while you create? Is there an artist or particular genre that you usually go to?

“If I’m working on pieces with with a lot of detail and transparent layers I’ll listen to music. I like concept albums albums for that. Usually various types of metal but I listen to The Ocean pretty regularly. They have a group of concept albums that seamlessly flow into each other. Some of their stuff dips into ambient metal and that helps me lock in for hours”
