The human figure is central to Kuntze’s paintings, but rarely anchored to solid ground.
Bodies drift, tumble, reach, and fall through painted clouds, moving freely across compositions without a fixed horizon. Their uncertain direction leaves ascent and descent deliberately open to interpretation.
Atmosphere becomes a landscape of its own.
Soft transitions of color create environments that feel expansive without describing a specific place. Within them, clouds gather and dissolve while Kuntze’s figures move freely through the surrounding color.
Look closely and no two figures occupy the space in quite the same way.
Some appear weightless, others seem caught mid-fall, while groups gather and separate throughout the composition. These fragmented bodies create a constant sense of movement against backgrounds that remain soft, diffuse, and atmospheric.
That contrast is central to Kuntze’s visual language. Delicate figures and flashes of color punctuate atmospheric fields, while subtle shifts in tone and luminosity move the eye continuously across the surface.
From a distance, the paintings can appear almost abstract. Up close, individual gestures and bodies come sharply into view.
Throughout Kuntze’s practice, the human figure exists without solid ground. Bodies ascend, descend, and move through environments with no fixed beginning or end, leaving their direction intentionally unresolved.
The result is a world caught in perpetual motion, where atmosphere becomes the landscape and the figures within it seem to exist somewhere beyond the rules of gravity.
