The Museum’s collection contains around 20 works featuring stained glass, ranging from full window panels from the 13th century to more modern decorative-arts pieces, like a ceiling lamp by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Stained-glass windows date to the 12th century, when they were prominent fixtures in city spaces and homes for the wealthier classes. Most often, though, stained-glass windows—both then and now—are associated with sacred spaces.

Have you visited our American galleries lately? If so, you might notice a couple works now back on view: Robert Motherwell’s In Beige with Sand and Ben Shahn’s The Red Stairway!

Motherwell’s mixed-media work merges painting with collage elements, exploring the relationship between reality and abstraction through the use of commonly found objects. Shahn’s The Red Stairway depicts a crumbling environment and a figure with one leg, conveying the wreckage that World War II left behind.

Opening June 12, Picturing Independence marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Spanning from 1770 to 2018, this exhibition features around 30 works from the Museum’s collection that explore how artists have pictured the American Revolution, military service, and the evolving visual language of national identity.

Picturing Independence will be on view through January 24, 2027. For more information, head to the link below.
