Harriet Goodhue Hosmer's Zenobia in Chains makes its grand return back to SLAM after being on view at the Missouri History Museum.

For Hosmer, the female ruler embodied a woman's ability to move beyond the constraints placed on her, choosing to depict her strength rather than her victimization. Hosmer noted, "I have tried to make her too proud to exhibit passion or emotion of any kind; not subdued, though a prisoner; but calm, grand, and strong within herself.”

From sailing down the Mississippi River while sketching on a boat to publishing a book of prints in Germany, the life of 19th-century American artist Henry Lewis has as many twists and turns as the scenes he painted. Lewis, who has two paintings of the Midwest on view at SLAM and many prints in the online collection, was born in England and later immigrated to the US with his family.

He worked as a theater scene painter in St. Louis before achieving fame for his massive panorama of the Mississippi River in 1849. Learn more about Lewis and his works on our 1 Fine Arts Blog post, linked below.

The Saint Louis Art Museum revealed its largest artwork to the public in 2013, but the sculpture’s origins go back decades. The story began when renowned English sculptor Andy Goldsworthy first visited St. Louis in the 1980s.

Goldsworthy didn’t know then that he’d return to the city more than 20 years later to create Stone Sea, a monumental, 300-ton sculpture.
