Established in 2010, Historic Classical, Inc., is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the memory and legacy of Classical High School in Springfield, MA. Erected in 1897, the high school first opened as Springfield High School, then changed its name to Central High School, and then, in the late '30s, changed its name once again to Classical High School. Classical High School was a pre

stigious high school, earning many state and national honors and graduating many famous individuals, including Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), Taj Mahal, William Manchester, Adele Addison, and Gwen Ifill. Historic Classical has established a museum of Classical High School artifacts in the former building at 235 State Street in Springfield. So far, nearly 300 items of memorabilia have been collected. More than anything, however, Historic Classical needs monetary donations in order to make improvements to the displays. The museum needs donations toward the purchase of glass shelves, lighting, signage, and more. The goal is to be able to display all the items that have been donated to the museum. Your monetary donations are very welcome. Make checks payable to Historic Classical, Inc., and send to Historic Classical, 235 State Street, Springfield, MA 01103, attn. Carol Costa. Donations are fully tax-deductible. For information, call 413.733.3030.

Springfield citizens worked diligently at Springfield Armory for 174 years to provide our military with the best infantry weapons necessary to safeguard the nation and its interests. During WWII, employment peaked at just under 14,000 - 42% of those being women. It wasn't all work and no play! Join Park Ranger Susan Ashman as she discusses what life was like as an employee on the home front at this "Arsenal of Freedom" and how these Soldiers of Production worked to help win the war and shape America's destiny.

Historic Classical Inc. Hosts Nationally Acclaimed Navy Artist

Springfield, MA – Historic Classical, Inc. will host a free online program on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Wilma Parker, a 1959 graduate of Classical High School, will speak on her Legacy Painting, Homecoming NAS Alameda. She spent three years working on the 44 x 128” oil painting of the Naval Air Station located in Alameda, California. Captain James Dodge had been charged with closure of the base. The work was commissioned by Captain Dodge, on behalf of the U.S. Navy to preserve the legacy and history of NAS Alameda.

Parker’s charge was to accurately portray all the planes from the WWII Doolittle raiders to present day, and in their correct approach positions. The painting includes the historic aircraft carrier Hornet on the left of the mural, up to the then new carrier Carl Vinson, that many had thought would never have a mission. But it was from the deck of the Carl Vinson that the body of Osama bin Laden was buried at sea in 2011.

A copy of the painting was framed and mounted through a grant provided by the Springfield Cultural Council. It is on display in the Historic Classical Museum, housed within the Classical Condominiums, 235 State Street, Springfield, MA. It will be unveiled during the program.

After Classical High School, Wilma Parker graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and the School of The Art Institute of Chicago. Her career led her from Springfield to Chicago to San Francisco, where she currently resides, and at least annually to the East and to Europe where she continues to develop her art. Currently, she works exclusively for the U.S. Navy and the Blues and Royals, the Household Calvary, Windsor Barracks in Great Britain.

Historic Classical, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of the former Classical High School. The mission of Historic Classical is to keep the history and memories of the former high school alive by inviting the public to events at the site of the old school, where Classical Condominiums now exists and a museum of memorabilia is housed.
