The original 1966 Batmobile built by George Barris in 1965 for the TV series, "Batman" which ran on ABC from 1966-1968, and forever in reruns after that. The "Batman" movies started coming out in 1989 creating a variety of several new futuristic Batmobiles for years to come. To us, none of them compare to the original 1966 Batmobile. The 1955 Lincoln Futura is what became the 1966 Batmobile.
The Futura was a concept car created by Ford and was a show stopper in the 1955 auto shows around the country. Some of the features of the Futura would go on to appear in future Lincolns, Mercurys, and Fords. In 1959 the Futura was repainted red from white, and used in the film "It Started with A Kiss" with Debbie Reynolds and Glenn Ford. George Barris, who had a working relationship with Ford, later bought the car from Ford for $1.00. It would then sit behind his shop deteriorating for several years.
Dean Jeffries was originally going to build the Batmobile, using a 1959 Cadillac. However, the show's producers gave a short window of time to produce the car, and he turned down the project. George Barris was then approached. Barris, thinking his Futura would be the answer, accepted the job. He had three weeks to create the car. Initially, the Batmobile was delivered to 20th Century Fox (October 1965) only in primer. In 1966, Barris built one more replica in steel, and three more in fiberglass.
In 2013, the original Barris Batmobile sold at auction for $4,600,000. Today, several companies build replicas of the original Batmobile. Only one company, Fiberglass Freaks, is licensed by DC Comics. They will cost you from $120,000-260,000 depending on options. Two "Batman" films were made before the TV series. One in 1943, and a 15 episode film serial in 1949. In 1943, the Batmobile was a 1939 Cadillac Series 75 convertible--and in 1949, it was a standard 1949 Mercury convertible. Some of our photos are from the page "The 1966 TV Batmobile"---a fantastic page worth checking out.

Three of the original "Rockford Files" Firebirds. Pat McKinney of Southern California is the proud owner of three of the iconic gold Firebirds used for filming the TV series, "The Rockford Files." Pat has a 1976 model, and two of the 1978s. All are in various stages of restoration. "Rockford" ran on NBC from 1974-1980 and starred James Garner. Each year, until 1978, the series would get three new Firebirds. One was used for interior filming, one was used for stunts, and one was used for "normal" driving. Garner, who did most of his own stunts, chose to stick with the 1978 models through 1980 because he didn't think the new 1979 front end suited the Jim Rockford character. It was different enough that it would have made it too apparent the always broke Rockford had a new car. In 1974, the series initially used Firebird Esprits. From 1975 on, they used Firebird Formula 400's. All Formula 400 badging and decals were removed, as were the "Formula" hood scoops and the rear spoilers. The Firebirds were made to look like base models but had the Formula 400 performance for stunt driving. Each year the Firebirds arrived at Livingston Pontiac in Woodland Hills in factory colors Durango Bronze or Buckskin Metallic. They would then be repainted in a slightly different shade of gold that worked better for filming. Cherokee Productions (Garner's company) would purchase the Firebirds for a "nominal" price through the PR division of Pontiac and GMC. At the end of the year, the Firebirds went back to Livingston Pontiac, rebadged as Formula 400s, and sold to the public. Garner was also loaned a new Firebird and GMC truck each year to use personally. After a day of filming, it was not uncommon for Garner to drive home in one of the "Rockford" Firebirds. Occasionally, his teenage daughter, Gigi, was "stuck" having to drive one of the Firebirds to high school--something that embarrassed her so much, she would park it around the corner. Imagine that? Today, Pat McKinney regularly gets together with a group of friends that also have "Rockford" or replica Firebirds. Occasionally they will drive to former shooting locations. Photos from their get-togethers can be seen here on Brian's Rockford Files. Recently, Gigi Garner launched "The Official James Garner page," which we encourage you to check out.

Ginger Rogers' 1975 Dodge Coronet Sation Wagon. Rogers kept the station wagon at her 1000 acre Oregon Ranch near Medford. Rogers' purchased her ranch, which had a working dairy, in 1940 and used it as a retreat from Hollywood for about 50 years. In her later years, she split her time between Oregon and her house in the Palm Springs area. Her 1975 Dodge wagon was a practical choice for her to use around her ranch, and it's fitting it was a Chrysler product. For years, Ginger Rogers acted as a spokesperson for Chrysler--beginning in the 1930s. Rogers also had a 1969 Imperial that she used around Oregon, and someone in the Medford area had her pink and white 1955 Imperial sitting in a barn for years. Rogers' Dodge was sold at the RM Sothebys Petersen Automotive Museum auction in December of 2018. In that auction, the most expensive lot was a 1956 Ferrari that sold for $22 million. Rogers' Dodge may have been the cheapest lot--it sold for $5600 (inclusive of fees). Her Dodge seems to be back in Oregon, and for sale again. It's on Craigslist in the Portland area for a little more than twice the price it sold for at auction. Ginger Rogers, who was a devout Christian Scientist, passed away in 1995 at the age of 83 at her home in Rancho Mirage.

Miniature Chariots of Fire

On Friday, 28 June 2019, in the Czech city of Týniště nad Orlicí, a short earthquake destroyed one-third of the exhibition of the local Museum of Metal Models with the collections of the famous collector Eduard Pařízek.

One of the walls was at a critical point of the seismic impact, causing four display cases to break away, completely filled with 1:64 scale models.

For Eduard, the devastating effects of the earthquake in Týniště are a great personal tragedy. He's been collecting car models for fifty years. He worked on the exhibition carefully and invested enormous energy in it. https://1gr.cz/fotky/idnes/19/081/org/THE7d3c49_Sberatel_Eduard_Parizek_8.jpg

Sad news from Texas. One of the iconic Cadillacs at the Cadillac Ranch was torched by arsonist. Dishearting that someone would do that to the popular Route 66 roadside attraction.

I have been there twice and love the organic nature of how the ”graffiti art” (sprayed on by visitors) changes their appearance. I suspect local kids and they likely put it on social media. Very sad.

The current underground garage at "The Beverly Hillbillies" mansion. It can accommodate at least 35 cars. The iconic show ran from 1962-1971 on CBS. The Kirkeby mansion became instantly recognized as the "Beverly Hillbillies" mansion---and for years (to the dismay of the Kirkebys) became a constant tourist attraction at 750 Bel Air Rd.--in Bel Air (and not Beverly Hills). After Carlotta Kirkeby died in 1985, the house was sold to Univision chairman, Jerry Perenchino--who gutted the home and named the property "Chartwell". He passed away in 2017, and the house has been put on the market. To the disappointment of many, Perenchino changed the entrance to the home so that it would no longer be visible from the road. Asking price? A bargain at $195 million--down from the original asking price of $350 million. Zillow's estimate is $68,313,823 as of today. The Kirkebys were paid $500 per day for filming--and it was outside only. A link to the property here-
