In August, Hillbilly Garden Club had a Wacky Gardeners Day to show off our best gardening get-ups and tell how we would complete the phrase, “When I go to my garden, I always…”. The costumes were hilarious and so were the explanations!

I get these in my yard near a rotting tree trunk only my “fingers” are shorter and stubby.

A specimen of Xylaria polymorpha, commonly known as Dead man’s fingers 😮

Dead man’s fingers, is a saprobic fungus which consumes the polysaccharides in timber, leaving behind soft, nutrient-rich debris on which many invertebrates feed. It is fairly common in the UK, Ireland, mainland Europe and parts of North America.
It is recognized by its elongated upright, clavate, or strap-like stromata poking up through the ground, much like fingers, and with the fruiting body often appearing like burned wood. Fittingly named, these swollen, blackened ‘fingers’ reaching for the sky seem as if someone buried under the woodland floor is trying to make one final attempt at escaping.

When the weather is too hot to be out in the garden or be in a field trip, our club members gather for fun workshops.

When we first entered the room we were handed a secret seed packet. We could look at it, then our mission was to ask others with hints if they matched our seed name. When we found the person, we became seating partners. Then we share things like favorite foods, hobbies, travel destinations, etc. we learned more details about each other.

As a group, we shared each partner’s commonalities.

Then we began our make and take activity—assembling garden wands. We were given assorted beads and charms that we put into a threaded rod. When all of the beads were on, we topped the wand off with a crystal k**b.

We can place them in inside or outside potted plants or dress up the outside garden area.

When they were completed, we participated in a native plant trivia quiz. Correct answers earned points. Cathy Renner scored big and was awarded a potted plant into which she put her garden wand!

Fun times and great companionship was enjoyed by all!

One of the many fun things we do with our garden club includes different workshop opportunities. This one was lead by Dottie Moe, teaching us about rock painting. Come join our club for great workshops and field trip outings!
