For those of you who do not have a flag pole the proper way to honor a fallen hero with your flag at half staff is to place a black streamer on the flag as shown in the picture. They can be purchased at your local flag store "Uncle Sams Flags".
My Memorial Day speech at the Cemetery:
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. In 1868 Union Soldiers started placing decorations on soldiers graves who had been killed in the Civil War. Memorial Day was not declared a National holiday until 1971. In 1775 George Washington was appointed the Commander of the Continental Army. General Washington had no soldiers, uniforms or equipment. His first order by the Continental Congress was to defeat the best equipped and best disciplined Army in the Word, the British Army. The Continental Army would be outnumbered 3-1 in many of the battles that followed. Today less than 1% of the people in America can document their ancestry back to the Rev War. My 5 times great grandfather served in General Washington's body guard detachment. 250,000 men & women served in the Rev War. The youngest was Israel Trask age 10, he was cook helper and messenger. The oldest was General Israel Putman age 57. During the Rev War 6,824 soldiers died in combat, 10,000 died of disease and 8,500 died in prison. Most were buried in mass graves. Thanks to technology today we are starting to locate these graves. Our founding fathers adopted Benjamin Franklin's picture of a rattlesnake from his newspaper as a symbol for our country. It appeared on many of our flags with a saying "Don't Tread on Me". Benjamin Franklin's explanation of why a rattlesnake was " A rattlesnake never attacks without an warning. If you provoke a rattlesnake he will retaliate with deadly force. Don't mess with a rattlesnake and you will be fine."Today the rattlesnake can still be seen on the current US Army Flag and Navy Jack Flag. So on this Memorial Day 2016 as we honor our men & women who served in all wars, remember our founding fathers who put into motion the building blocks that helped form this great nation ( The United States of America)
