Hispanic Heritage Month | Josele Garza
The 1981 Rookie of the Year, hailing from Mexico City, Mexico, had a bold foray at Indy. At the time the rules required drivers to be at least 21, and while his racing license listed him at 22, he was actually 19. He claims to have not known about the license error, and held the record for youngest driver to compete in the Indy 500 until 2003.
Garza not only grabbed headlines with his speed, but his poise and maturity. After qualifying 6th, he led 13 laps! He was in contention to win battling with the leaders until a part failure caused him to crash while running 4th.
In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the accomplishments and enriching of our history through his story!
