Famed birder and bird guide author Lillian Stokes will explore the many ways people connect with birds and nature in an engaging talk filled with beautiful photography at the Wendell Gilley Museum on Tuesday, Oct. 6, as the museum’s People-Nature-Art speaker for the month. This program is free but registration is required. There is a public reception at 6pm followed by the program at 7pm and that program will also be livestreamed. “Whether it’s birding, photography, bird-feeding, art, or even experiencing a spiritual and uplifting bond, it can change one’s life and is open to all,” Stokes says. She is an award-winning co-author (with her late husband, Don) and photographer of 35 “Stokes Guides,” which have sold more than 6 million copies nationwide. She was also a producer, videographer, and co-host of two national PBS bird-watching TV series that were seen by more than 40 million viewers. For more than 35 years, she has educated the birding public, giving keynote talks at birding festivals and organizations nationwide.

Join artist Siri Beckman, whose work is now in the Gilley’s Special Gallery, in conversation with poet and arts writer Carl Little in this special event at the Museum on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 2 to 4pm. Free and open to all but registration is required. Reception at 2pm and program begins at 2:30pm. This program is offered in-person or online. Beckman is a Maine artist renowned for her wood engravings and woodcuts. The current exhibition of her works includes more than 40 of her prints featuring birds and landscapes; and explores Siri's deep engagement with this process.

The Gilley is thrilled to bring the award-winning sculptor and multidisciplinary artist Spencer Tinkham to MDI to work with kids in Island schools, and talk about his work with all-comers in a free presentation at the Gilley on Tuesday, Sept. 22 as the Museum's People-Nature-Art presenter for the month. There is a public reception with w**e and light refreshments scheduled for 6pm that day, followed by his presentation at 7pm. The presentation can be enjoyed in person or online. Attendance at both is free but registration is required at www.wendellgilleymuseum.org/calendar.

Tinkham is known for creating intricate macro- and micro-sculptures of birds and other wildlife from reclaimed and salvaged material. His paintings, sculptures, and installations explore perception, ecological change, and natural history, and they are collected worldwide. He works from studios in Norfolk, Virginia and Madrid, Spain.
