Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to aircraft restoration. Progress continues on the L-17 thanks to our hard-working volunteers. How much do you know about the Navion? In 1962 when the services adopted their universal aircraft designating system, the designation of the Navion changed from L-17 to what?

#DidYouKnow that the B-25 was used for training pilots in support of the Northrop F-89 Scorpion and the Lockheed F-94 Starfire? After the war, many B-25 aircraft were used as training or reconnaissance aircraft, with most used for undergraduate training of multi-engine aircraft pilots slated for reciprocating engine or turboprop cargo. What interesting facts about the B-25 do you know? #FunFactFriday

Miss Mitchell gets yet another TV appearance. This time as part of our Raid over South Dakota tour that we recently completed in conjunction with the South Dakota Air & Space Museum in this story from our friends at South Dakota Public Broadcasting.

On April 17th, a WWII B-25 Bomber crossed the state in celebration of the 77th Anniversary of the famous Doolittle Raid over Japan. SDPB met the plane, her crew and the event organizers in Rapid City.

This #ThrowbackThursday we have a couple of posters from our museum for WWII War Bonds. Bonds were issued under a US Treasury program as a way to finance the enormous cost of the war effort. The government appealed to Americans through popular culture with celebrity spokespersons at rallies, films, posters, and other advertising. More than a quarter of a billion dollars' worth of advertising was donated during the first three years of the National Defense Savings Program alone. Over the course of the war, 85 million Americans purchased bonds totalling approximately $185 billion.

Being in the middle of the South Dakota Air & Space Museum's Raid Over South Dakota, we're very mindful of this day, and of our friend Dick Cole.

At 0800 hours #OTDIH in 1942, Admiral Halsey from the USS Enterprise sent the signal to USS Hornet: “LAUNCH PLANES, TO DOOLITTLE AND GALLANT COMMAND: GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS YOU, HALSEY.”

The task force had been spotted an hour earlier by a Japanese early warning boat so the decision was made to go early. To a man, the aircrews voluntarily agreed, knowing they would now not have enough fuel to reach their planned landing fields in China. Of the 16 planes, 15 either crash-landed, were ditched, or crashed after their crews bailed out. One aircraft and crew landed in Soviet Russia and were interned. Of the 80 airmen, 69 escaped capture or death, with three killed in action, and four in captivity.

The first off the deck at 0825 was Doolittle's crew, with his copilot Dick Cole.

Made it to Ellsworth and thinking of Dick Cole and the rest of the Raiders.

#TBT to when Miss Mitchell flew in a parade of B-25s during the 2017 CAF Wings Over Dallas airshow to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Doolittle Raid. This year, we'll celebrate the 77th Anniversary with a special trip with the South Dakota Air & Space Museum, which has become an even more important commemoration with the unfortunate passing of the last of the Doolittle Raiders, Dick Cole, this week.
