We’re immensely proud here at the gallery to be associate sponsors of this year’s upcoming “Django A Gogo Music Festival and Camp” taking place in both Maplewood, NJ and NYC from April 30-May 5. 😇

The festival is the creation of internationally-renowned composer, guitarist, and Django Reinhardt interpreter Stephane Wrembel. You might know him for his Grammy award-winning composition “Bistro Fada” from the Woody Allen movie “Midnight in Paris”. 🇫🇷

Since 2001, Wrembel has released over a dozen critically-acclaimed albums including a series of recordings in tribute to Reinhardt under the nom de plume, The Django Experiment. Since 2003, Django A GoGo has brought together some of the finest musicians in the world equally influenced by Reinhardt to celebrate the Sinti guitar style. 🙌

For further festival info and tickets, visit their website: www.djangoagogo.com. 🎟️🎟️

We’re writing to share some BIG news with you! 📣

Last year we celebrated our 20th anniversary. We hope you had a chance to see our survey exhibition “Twenty” featuring works by more than 50 international artists from throughout our history, as well as our two subsequent solo exhibitions by Michael Brennan and Sharon Brant. 🥂

At the end of April, we plan to shut down our gallery space at 16 Main Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn, and move the gallery closer to home. Just prior to the start of the pandemic, we moved our family from Brooklyn to South Orange, New Jersey, which is located just west of Newark and easily accessible by train from Penn Station. South Orange and our surrounding communities have had a vibrant arts and cultural community for more than two centuries. 🚛

We are currently in the market for a new permanent home for the gallery, which will host our public exhibitions, educational programming, advocacy and philanthropic work, library and archives, book and editions, inventory storage, and so much more. We are also planning to make our new venue completely green and sustainable, especially in response to the acceleration of climate change. We will announce complete details about our new location as soon as we have them. ⏳

In the meantime, we are open for business on our website, our Artsy page, and by private appointment. We also plan to enrich the content available through on our website, share meaningful information by email and social media, host online conversations, and possibly organize an in-person curatorial project or two in the near term. 💪

But most of all, we would like to THANK ALL OF YOU — the artists, curators, writers, editors, publishers, gallerists, collectors, advisors, architects, designers, art historians, arts administrators, donors, our landlord Two Trees, and our audience worldwide for your extraordinary, unwavering support of our programming over these many years. We are grateful to you. 🙌

Onward! 🚀

Yo Brooklyn! Stop in today to see Sharon Brant’s vibrant new exhibition “Change and Recurrence”. Our Saturday gallery hours are 11am-5pm. 😎

For more than five decades, Sharon Brant has produced conceptually and aesthetically rigorous hard-edged paintings, works on paper, drawings, and reliefs. In the works on view in her new exhibition “Change and Recurrence”, Brant continues to mine, question, challenge, and further her enduring investigation into the reductive elements of color, shape, and line, and their inexhaustible arrangement on a two-dimensional surface.

Brant’s new paintings concisely present two primary visual elements – a dominant, smoothly-painted field of a single color (e.g., pink, blue, orange, or black) which is topped by a dynamic, often impastoed set of concentric lines forming the shape of hovering energy. Her works pair passive and active, gestural and reductive, vibrant and subdued, dominant and recessive, and textured and flat elements in animated opposition.

We’re delighted to present the exhibition “Sharon Brant: Change and Recurrence” opening this Saturday, January 6, 4-6pm! This is the Beacon, New York-based artist’s third solo show at the gallery and it will present a selection of recent abstract paintings.

For more than five decades, artist Sharon Brant has produced conceptually and aesthetically rigorous hard-edged paintings, works on paper, drawings, and reliefs. In the works on view in her new exhibition Change and Recurrence, Brant continues to mine, question, challenge, and further her enduring investigation into the reductive elements of color, shape, and line, and their inexhaustible arrangement on a two-dimensional surface.

About her ongoing studio practice, Brant reflects, “Many times I wonder what a painting is; it mystifies me. Usually, I have to silence all other voices in my head when entering the studio. It’s when I have been painting for a while that I hear another voice, not mine, that speaks to me about the painting. Then I know I’m in the emotional space of the painting — a pause from the outside world that is the source of it all.”

The artist will give a free, online public talk via Zoom on Thursday, January 25, 7-8pm EST.

She will also lead an in-person exhibition walk-through on Saturday, March 2, 3pm.

We’re very excited to share this engaging new review of Michael Brennan’s exhibition by artist and writer Kit White for Tussle Magazine. A BIG THANKS to Kit for sharing his insights and to the team at Tussle for publishing them! 🙌

“Like all really good painters, Michael Brennan understands the mercurial nature of paint, how it embraces the dual identities of both material and image. He never forces paint to do something it doesn’t want to do. Instead, he lets it find itself and in so doing, finds the image it wants to make. This ability to grant paint its autonomy while at the same time controlling its direction is the crux of his talent and a sign of his mastery over paint’s sometimes fickle nature. What is immediately clear in this group of paintings at Minus Space, is that Brennan knows what he is doing and knows, also, that the paintings that have emerged from his wrist and palette knife have achieved the life in image that they sought...”
