Butler Historical Preservation Society

The Butler Historical Preservation Society is an organization dedicated to the preservation of the history of Butler, NY. We are a non-profit 501 c3 organization and all donations are tax-deductible. The Society received its provisional charter from New York State in 2003. The main focus of the Society since then has been the restoration of the Butler

Church Museum building and the Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse. Butler Church Museum

Built in 1836 by the Methodist Episcopal Congregation, this is the oldest known Methodist Church in Wayne County, NY. The church operated continually until the 1960's when declining membership and funds forced its closure. The church, now home to the Butler Church Museum, is on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places. Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse

The Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse is a historic one room school located in Butler, NY. Built by Daniel Roe in the 1820's, it is believed to be the oldest cobblestone schoolhouse in North America. The schoolhouse is on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places.

BBB #35 takes us back 137 years to Sept. 4, 1889 with events at the S. Butler Baptist church, which is where Antoinette Brown's ordination service was held in 1853 due to a leaking roof at the Congregational Church across West Main Street. The church closed in 1899 and in 1903 two neighbors bought the property, moved the building further back from the street and divided it into two halves to store carriages. In 2013, the building finally collapsed and was removed. This photo dated 1954 was taken from the Rural Steet side.

Big THANKS to all who joined us for Butler Bicentennial Day. The weather cooperated & everyone enjoyed the neighborhood stroll in S. Butler as well as the Butler Center Graveyard walk (Ed Dates, Robin Deleel, Jeff Harper, Pauline Harper, Randy Orbaker, Duane VanGelder, Joselyn VanGelder & Andrew Wadsworth) & presentations by Duane VanGelder, Mike Saeli, Steve Cotten, Bob Norris & Rozanne Stewart. We appreciate the help of Stanley Hyde & the Wolcott Lions Club for the delish chicken BBQ, Nancy Fuller for her basket making demonstration & Glenn Weiler's barrel train rides. If you missed it, you have to wait another 200 years!

Butler Bicentennial Bit #33 takes us to a Rochester D&C article on this date in 1903 with some serious storm damage.

Hopefully the weather will hold for Butler Bicentennial Day tomorrow (Sat., Aug. 22). Nancy Fuller will also be joining us with a basket making demonstration.

We will also be selling souvenirs & have recently received a new printing of the "Butler Revisited" book for $25 and also handmade wooden bookmarks ($5) by Historian Lori Schmidt using original raw materials found among the Hibbard Basket Works equipment stored in the Cotten farm to***co barn!

FYI, since we are a historical society we do things the old timey way with cash only for the BBQ as well as souvenirs.

4 more days til Butler Bicentennial Day! One of our speakers will be Steve Cotten presenting Hibbard Basket Works history. His relatives were part of that story so come on out & discover the industry that put S. Butler on the map!
