Welcome to the Golden Gate Railroad Museum (GGRM), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of steam and passenger railroad equipment, and the interpretation of railroad history in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Last summer, several generous donors helped to successfully fund Golden Gate Railroad Museum's project of painting the roof Southern Pacific Business Car #141 "Oakland." Now, volunteers have started painting the sides and upon the completion of that task, the car's restoration will be complete and ready for excursion service in Sonoma County. However, we need help reaching a fundraising goal of $5000 to ease the expense of purchasing all materials to paint the car in the two tone gray paint scheme. Some good news? GGRM is prepared to match all donations with the general fund 1 to 1. This means that if this GoFundMe reaches 100%, the museum will be able to successfully fund this $10,000 task. As with the last fundraiser, donors contributing $1,000 or more will receive their name on a brass plaque displayed inside the car containing a growing list of generous donors. Several donors have already guaranteed their spot via the last fundraiser. We are excited about completing this last monumentous task in the Oakland's restoration and appreciate all the generosity from our donors.

A new meaning to a Jimmy Screamin' Down the Road.

Last winter we moved our storage Econo-Bags and Boxcar via the Union Pacific Railroad from long term storage in Salinas to our yard in Sonoma.

Today we picked up the remaining equipment on the ground including storage containers and this General Motors EMD 16-567C.

Thanks to S&R Transport for the trucking, Salinas Crane and Rigging for the Salinas lift, and Reliable Crane and Rigging for the Sonoma lift.

Interior and mechanical/electrical work is wrapping up on the Oakland, so attention is turning to the exterior.

The blind end has received a fresh coat of gray paint and attention has been moved to the sides of the car. A decent crowd of volunteers showed up today to work on sanding and filling the southern side of the car. Others were working on the yard on some track and locomotive projects.

GGRM is constantly looking for volunteers. If you can spray paint, run a sander, or are willing to learn, we have a spot for you!

This weekend, GGRM volunteer crews converted Executive Business car 'Oakland's' dining room into additional passenger carrying lounge space with the addition of 4 plush chairs, custom hand made mahogany end tables, and stained glass Tiffany lamps. We are in love with this room and can't wait to host passengers in it (date TBD).

To load the furniture into the car, we needed to remove a window to fit the chairs. We chose the fogged over plexiglass window to remove. This window will be rebuilt with new gaskets and new safety glass to give passengers a clear view of Sonoma Wine Country.

In between rainstorms, our volunteers have been completing the cleaning and polishing of FM 1487.

Sitting in the setting Sonoma sun sit the set of cars once stored in Salinas. The multiple treks our volunteers made down there to ensure they made the journey without issue paid off.

A fantastic effort was made by GGRM volunteers this weekend. Engine 1487 was washed, buffed and waxed which reinvigorate the vibrant orange of the tiger stripe scheme.

Greetings friends of the GGRM!

We have some projects this weekend (February 7, 2026) in Schellville that we can use some help on:

Polishing of FM 1487. We'd like to get it's faded orange polished back to it's vibrant SP tiger stripe scheme, and then washed and waxed. If we have 3 or 4 people, it should take a couple hours.

Needle gunning Oakland Underframe. We will be getting ready to paint the underframe of the Oakland in the coming weeks (weather dependent) and need to get the loose paint off of the underframe of the Oakland. This will involve needle scaling and wire wheeling.

So if you can run a polishing wheel or needle gun or are willing to learn, come on down. A pizza lunch will be provided. We will meet around 10 AM at the Schellville yard.
