Big shark. Big history. Big Maryland energy.

We’re supporting the designation of Otodus megalodon as Maryland’s official State Shark — and it would be the first state shark in the country.

Megalodon isn’t just famous — it’s local. Fossilized teeth from this prehistoric giant (which may have reached nearly 80 feet long) have been found in at least seven Maryland counties. One discovery even included the only associated set of megalodon teeth ever found in the state — meaning they came from a single shark.

With more than 60 species of extinct sharks identified from fossils found throughout Maryland, the state has an incredible shark story to tell.

If you’re going to have a state shark… why not make it megalodon?

Opening March 6 at Calvert Marine Museum, Farmers, Patriots & Traitors: Southern Maryland and the War of 1812 explores the complicated choices faced by local residents just decades after the American Revolution. Were they defending their farms and families? Standing firm as patriots? Or risking accusations of treason to protect their livelihoods?

Created by JPPM and adapted by CMM, this immersive exhibit features interactive elements and local artifacts that bring these powerful stories to life.

Join us as part of Maryland’s 250th Celebration in Calvert County — and step into the gallery to decide for yourself.

In this mini aquarium tour, our Curator of Estuarine Biology takes a closer look at invasive species and explains how introducing new animals into our rivers and waterways can have long-lasting impacts on local ecosystems.

This video is part of our ongoing series, where we explore the tanks in our gallery and the species that call them home. Follow along each Tuesday to learn more about the life in our waters.

While on a recent trip to Calvert Cliffs, this shed exoskeleton of a modern horseshoe crab was found wedged between a fallen block of cliff sediment and the base of the intact cliff. The exoskeleton was sufficiently rigid and resilient that during the unknown amount of time it had been wedged in that place, it had “carved” the outline of its head shield into the intact sediments. It is not known exactly how that happened, but presumably slight, high tide generated movements by the fallen block pressing against the dorsal shield of the exoskeleton were sufficient to “carve” its profile into the sediments.
