If youโve been walking along the Canal lately, you may have noticed the lack of water and the smell of dying wildlife.
According to CBS News Philadelphia, The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources provided a detailed statement:
"The Center Bridge pump at Delaware Canal State Park was found knocked over and determined to be non-functional. The Center Bridge pump is responsible for bringing water into the New Hope section of the canal. The river levels in the Center Bridge area of the canal are normal for this time of year, and no known storm event impacted the pump.
River conditions must first recede and stabilize to allow staff to safely return the pump to an upright position. In addition, electrical issues have been identified with the switch that controls the pump.
Once the pump is restored to position, staff will proceed with further electrical diagnostics and necessary repairs.
Current conditions indicate that water levels in New Hope are decreasing. With minimal precipitation forecasted, canal water levels are expected to continue to drop, so we are hopeful to upright the pump soon. We will provide updates on timelines for returning the pump to service as soon as possible."

Unlike a natural creek or river, parts of the southern Delaware Canal rely on mechanical pumps that move water from the Delaware River into the canal system near Centre Bridge. Without these pumps, water levels in New Hope and nearby sections can quickly fall.
This dependence on pumping infrastructure has become increasingly problematic as aging equipment, flood damage, drought conditions, and maintenance issues have repeatedly interrupted water flow.
This failure was not an isolated event. In 2015, another broken pump at Centre Bridge caused water levels to drop dramatically near New Hope. State workers and volunteers rushed to rescue stranded fish from isolated pools before they suffocated. Carp, perch, and smallmouth bass were among the species affected.
A similar pump failure occurred again in 2017, leaving sections of the canal dry for days until repairs could be completed. Officials stated that an impeller from the pump had to be sent away for rehabilitation before water service could resume.

When canal water disappears suddenly, the ecological consequences can be immediate and severe.
Fish are usually the most visibly affected animals. Species including carp, bass, perch, sunfish, and stocked trout can become trapped in isolated puddles where oxygen levels rapidly decline. As the water warms and stagnates, many suffocate. During major drawdowns, residents have reported seeing fish โflapping on the basin of the canalโ or floating dead along the towpath.
Fish kills can also trigger secondary environmental problems. Decomposing fish reduce oxygen even further and attract flies and scavengers.
Crayfish, freshwater mussels, aquatic insects, snails, and other invertebrates are especially vulnerable because many cannot relocate quickly enough when water disappears. Crayfish often burrow into mud to survive dry periods, but prolonged drought or sudden dewatering can still wipe out large numbers.
Because these small creatures form the base of the canal food web, their loss affects fish, turtles, birds, and mammals higher up the chain.
The canal has long supported populations of muskrats, which build dens into the canal banks and feed on aquatic vegetation. When water levels collapse, muskrats lose cover from predators and access to food sources. Their burrows may also collapse as exposed mud dries and cracks.
Ironically, muskrats are sometimes blamed for weakening canal embankments through burrowing, which can contribute to leaks and structural instability.
Snapping turtles, painted turtles, frogs, salamanders, and other amphibious animals often attempt to migrate when canal sections dry out. During previous dewatering events, residents described turtles crawling across mud and exposed canal bottoms searching for deeper water.
Amphibians are particularly sensitive because they depend on shallow wet habitats for breeding.
Birdlife around the canal changes dramatically during dry periods. Herons, egrets, kingfishers, osprey, and bald eagles normally feed on canal fish populations. When fish die off, food availability drops.
However, some birds temporarily benefit from drying conditions.
Great blue herons and egrets may find it easier to catch stranded fish in shallow pools. Gulls, vultures, crows, and other scavengers also feed on dead aquatic animals.
Still, repeated fish kills can reduce long-term biodiversity and weaken the canal as a stable feeding corridor.

Surprisingly, periodic drawdowns are not entirely negative.
Some environmental managers argue that controlled draining can help reduce invasive fish populations, remove sediment buildup, and expose accumulated debris for cleanup.
Temporary mudflats can also create feeding habitat for shorebirds and wading birds that forage in shallow water. In some cases, planned drawdowns allow crews to repair canal walls, remove storm debris, dredge sediment, and stabilize infrastructure that otherwise could fail catastrophically. These repairs may ultimately benefit the ecosystem over the long term.
However, conservation groups generally stress that emergency dewatering caused by pump failures is far more damaging than carefully managed seasonal maintenance.

Their proposals include additional pumps, modernized hydraulics, and emergency water supply connections that could keep sections watered even during repairs or failures.
The issue has become more urgent as aging infrastructure collides with stronger storms, flood damage, and periodic drought conditions across the Delaware River Basin.
For residents of New Hope and Solebury Township, the canal is more than a historic relic. It is an ecosystem, a recreational trail, a scenic attraction, and a defining part of the communityโs identity. Each time the canal runs dry, it serves as a reminder that even historic landscapes require constant maintenance and modern infrastructure to survive.
