Thank you to John Daughenbaugh, Dennis Klinger, and the team at Daughenbaugh Funeral Home for their ongoing support of the David House Museum's mission to preserve local history.

Funeral services have been rooted in Snow Shoe since around 1900. Spanning from the Confer Funeral Home on North Moshannon Avenue to the Von Johnson and Robert Dixon eras on West Sycamore Street—and its reopening in 2007—each era has shaped the Mountaintop Area. Today, Daughenbaugh Funeral Home continues this long-standing tradition of care.

At the David House Heritage Museum, we love a good local history story, and the Clarence Loyal Order of Moose has a great one.

Chartered in 1917, the Moose called the old Sugar Camp school building home before settling into the "Chamber's Mansion" at 851 Clarence Road in 1940. But by 1981, the lodge was struggling — just 96 members, a building in disrepair, and about $17,000 in debt.

That's when longtime officer Pat Casher, along with friends George "Boo Boo" Almashie Jr., Bryan Hall, Jerry Mann, and Cliff, Ron, and Howie Chambers, got to work. For two years, they took turns tending bar on weekends — unpaid — to help turn things around. As membership and revenue grew, so did their plans: remodeling the building room by room, converting unused space into an apartment, and adding a full kitchen in 2018. Through it all, the lodge never took out a bank loan for any of the work, funding every improvement themselves.

In 2016, Pat's decades of dedication were honored with the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, the Loyal Order of the Moose's highest honor, conferred at Mooseheart, Illinois. Fittingly, Pat received the award exactly 35 years to the day after his mentor, Carl Schmoke, received his own in 1981.

Today the Moose is thriving with over 1,700 members. We're grateful for their continued support of the David House’s fundraising efforts — thank you for everything you do for the Mountaintop.

From its formation on January 27, 1840, coal played a major role in Snow Shoe Township, with family-operated mines shipping coal right from our local hills. By 1881, the Berwind-White Coal Company opened the No. 10 mine, building five double houses and a large boarding house for local miners.

While the names of several Clarence roads were officially updated over two decades ago, the old mine numbers never truly left our vocabulary—you'll still hear locals say, "He grew up on No. 22."

No. 18 → Cherry Road (T-707)
No. 26 → Black Bear Road (T-405)

Heartfelt thanks to Al Puhalla and the Puhalla family for their generous support of our fundraising efforts at the David House Heritage Museum.

Local roots run deep here on the Mountaintop, and the Puhalla family story is a true testament to the hard work and dedication that built our community. Descendants of the Slovak and Italian families who settled in Clarence in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Al founded Mountain Top Welding, LLC in 1988 alongside his son, A.J.

What began as welding and fabrication for local exploration and coal mining companies quickly expanded into major operations. In 2003, the business name was changed to A&A Construction because welding was only a fraction of the work being done, including building locations for drilling rigs, pipelines, stream crossings, demolition, and trucking with 77 straight trucks and trailers with over 100 employees.

In 2016, A.J. returned the company to its original name, Mountain Top Welding. Today, it stands as a shining example of Mountaintop entrepreneurship.

As A.J.puts it:
"Like most small business entrepreneurs, it has been a labor of love. I truly enjoyed what I did and am still doing. And like all the other business owners, it was just long hours, short nights, and due diligence to the jobs."

We are incredibly grateful to community champions like the Puhalla family who remember their roots and give back to help preserve our shared history.

Since 1991, the Snow Shoe Original Brothers Pizza has been a beloved staple of the Mountaintop community—marking 35 years of incredible service.

The family-owned business was founded by Anthony “Tony” Pistone and his brothers, who immigrated from Sicily with their father in 1954. Over the years, Tony expanded the business to Beech Creek, Milesburg, Millheim, Zion, and the Nittany Mall. The final two locations included Northland Center in State College and the Snow Shoe restaurant, which Tony built alongside his daughter, Josie, and her husband, Ed Findley.

A huge thank you to Josie, Ed, and the Original Brothers Pizza team for their generous sponsorship and continued support of The David House fundraising events.

Join CCHS for a viewing of Graves on Indian Lane which explores the layered history of a little-known burial site in Centre County, a memorial honoring two Revolutionary War soldiers who were killed in action on July 24, 1778, in an engagement with five American Indians. The documentary film is about 17 minutes in length and discussion will follow.
