Book a paint your own pottery adventure with us!

Directions to follow. Please advise yourself before you begin your trials and tribulations with the salamanders.

We start in the shop…

and we choose a very beautifully made (by hand—or at least in shop) piece of porcelain pottery.

Then we begin the process of designing, outlining, and painting out chosen piece.

Make sure to dust it off before you begin painting and don’t be afraid of putting pencil to… well, pottery. The graphite will burn off during firing and just your beautiful design will be left behind!

Fair warning before you start painting: don’t plan on painting the bottom unless you want it to melt and get stuck on the kiln like a rubber duck on a hot dashboard.

Congratulations!!

You’ve finished your end of the process, but what happens next?

Well, when you’re done and feel you’ve accomplished the most beautiful, amazing, wonderfully extravagant painting possible: say goodbye, because you’ll never see that again.

Really enjoy the moment, hand it off to your friendly shop keep so we can begin our side of the transformation, and don’t forget to let go (because we can’t make it last forever unless you do 😉)

Now, what’s happened here?

That friendly shop keep has handed it off to our glaze crew, masters of their craft, enjoyers of mystery.

That crew then hides your piece away in the back so we can keep it and remakes an entirely new one from scratch- hang on… I’m getting new information…

Disregard that.

What actually happens is that our lovely glazers take your piece and dip it in our house mixed vats of clear or celadon glaze! It might seem like they carved out all of the beautiful plants I spent many a moon delicately painting onto the plate—I’m happy to tell you they are still there, fully intact, and just as I left them (and just as you would leave yours)—but that’s not it at all, they’re just under a layer of other stuff.

Adding the glaze on over the paints (also known as underglaze) doesn’t affect your painting at all, it only creates a surface that is non-porous and therefore safe to eat off of.

Finally!! My precious——ahem, your beauty arrives at the other end!
