November 14, 2026 to be in Smithville for the 50th year of The tour of Homes event sponsored by the Smithville Garden Club. Five beautiful homes and one historic church will be open from 11-3. Tickets are now available from garden club members or can be purchased at each home or at the Chamber of Commerce in town on the event day. More fun information coming each day as the countdown begins…….

The October Yard of the Month is presented to Roger and Debbie Westbrook at 187 Wrangler Lane in La Reata Ranch.
Roger and Debbie had their home built in 2014. They maintain a beautifully groomed yard with many flower beds and multiple colorful flower pots. They also have a large and extensive vegetable garden with emphasis on tomatoes, onions, peppers of all kind, okra and Pecos cantaloupes.
Debbie is especially proud of two pots of Kalanchoe she received from her grandmother that she has managed to nurture for 45 years!!!
She loves Marigolds, roses, her Magnolia tree, and Esperanza. They have a log planter that Roger made hanging at the entrance to their driveway. Of special note is a plant that we received a cutting of at an Orchid pilgrimage the club took to San Antonio during COVID. Hers is thriving.
Although October is a hard month for gardening with the extreme Texas heat, drought and deer eating anything green, the Westbrooks have managed to maintain a lovely landscape worthy of our award.

Our first meeting of the Smithville Garden Club was a success with over 50 members in attendance. There were a lot of new business to take care of with passing out Tour of Home tickets and new yearbooks to distribute to members. Our special guest was Kathy Danielson from the Smithville Chamber of Commerce who gave an overview of the upcoming events in our community.
Reminder: Put November 14th on your calendars to our annual Tour of Homes event in Smithville. Homes open at 11-3. Tickets are available now at $20 from any garden club member. Message me and I can get you some!!!!

Jenny Busche at 200 4th Ave is the September, 2026 recipient of Yard of the Month. We appreciate that she agreed to the award considering it was preceded by over a month of extreme drought. She diligently and
amazingly was able to keep watered her lovely streetscape of Vincas, Blue Salvia, Red Yuccas and poIed succulents. It’s especially advantageous for her to receive the honor because her property and our sign are quite
prominent as one enters “the hill”. Hopefully it will be an inspiration to all who see it. Her house is also an inspiration. It’s a beautiful 1911 Texas Rural style (possibly built from a
Sears & Roebuck kit that were popular during that period). She has lived in it 21 years and bought it from a member of the original family that built it. It sits on a double lot with lots of trees, a chicken coop, an adjacent art studio where she created acrylic stained art, and has a wonderful wrap around porch where many happy hours have been enjoyed with friends and neighbors.
Beautiful star lilies line her paths and there are tropical beds of Rootbeer plants, Umbrella grass and Mexican Petunias. Thank you, Jenny, for creating a beautiful entrance to “the hill” for all to enjoy.
