In April 1926, the most famous pitcher in baseball was headed to Smithsburg. Not to pitch, but to chase foxes.

Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators, the "Big Train," watched the foxhounds of Lancelot Jacques Jr. of Smithsburg sweep the foxhound prizes at the Washington Kennel Show. He introduced himself on the spot and accepted an invitation to a fox chase over the mountains near town.

The Hagerstown Daily Mail made sure local fans knew he was not coming to pitch for the Hubs.

Tuesday, October 13 at 6:30 PM, join local historian and author Mark P. Brugh at the Smithsburg Branch Library for Ghosts of Antietam.
Drawing on decades of research, eyewitness accounts, newspaper reports, soldiers' letters, and local folklore, Brugh separates fact from fiction and looks at why Antietam has become one of America's most haunted landscapes. Books will be available for purchase and signing after the program.

Tonight: The Story of Peter Geiser, Pioneer of the Threshing Machine.

Geiser was a Smithsburg man. Born in 1826 on the family farm half a mile west of town, he built and tested the world's first practical threshing machine right here, in shops on that farm, before the business ever crossed into Pennsylvania.
Our own Ian Dawson presents his story tonight.
