McKean County Historical Society

McKean County Historical Society We provide a visual and educational history of McKean County and the services necessary to further explore and understand our county's place in history.
The McKean County Historical Society (MCHS) is a nonprofit organization based in the Old Jail Museum in Smethport, PA. We do accept donations, charge an admission fee for tours, and run a gift shop; these proceeds help support us when we present programs and other events. You can become a member of MCHS for a fee. We also offer tours of the museum. These tours can be for a single person or for a group; they include two stories of the building. We are currently working on repairing and remodeling a section of the second floor and hope to have it available for touring soon. The programs and events mentioned above take place either at the Old Jail Museum or the McKean County Courthouse. Our advertisements specify the location of the program/event. Staff at the museum includes volunteers and individuals involved in the PathStone program. We sometimes offer internships and also allow students to complete their senior projects at the museum.

The Old Jail Museum, located in the former county jail, which was built in 1875-76, is a wonderful place to visit and discover the ever-evolving story of McKean County.

Arts on the Island

Happy 4th of July from the McKean County Historical Society. Here is another photo taken last Saturday. The lumniaries are visible on the bank of the island to the right of the fireworks. Thank you again to all that supported the museum by purchasing the luminaries, the volunteers that assembled and sold the luminaries, Stephanie Keifer for suggesting the project and the Smethport Fire Department for another spectacular fireworks display

Here is a photo of the island taken shortly after the fireworks. A big thanks to all of the volunteers that helped assemble and sell the luminary kits and to those that setup, light and remove them on Sunday morning. A special thanks to Stephanie Keifer for presenting the idea at one of the first "Arts on the Island" planning meetings.

And, a very special thanks to all those that purchased and decorated the luminaries. Your support for our county's museum is appreciated and you helped make the island and the Smethport Fire Department's fireworks a spectacular event.

Please share. We will be selling the remaining luminaries at the lake tonight before the fireworks.

Surround the Island at Hamlin Lake Park
A Luminary Community Art Project
Because of inclement weather last Saturday, the “Luminary Community Art Project” sponsored by the McKean County Historical Society to surround Hamlin Lake Island with luminaries was postponed to this Saturday, June 30th. We will be on the island by 7 pm setting luminaries out and selling them, price is $3 each. If you have purchased kits already, please bring them to the Old Jail Museum by Friday, June 29th before 4 pm., or bring them to us at the island on the 30th. Each kit provides a white bag, sand and a candle. They may be left plain or decorated, can be made in memory or honor of a loved one. On Saturday you may place them at marked spots around the island. We will start lighting them at 8:30 pm., and they will burn for 4 to 5 hours.

The fireworks are always spectacular, but this special tribute will last even longer.
