The McKean County Historical Society (MCHS) is a nonprofit organization based in the Old Jail Museum in Smethport, PA. We do accept donations, charge an admission fee for tours, and run a gift shop; these proceeds help support us when we present programs and other events. You can become a member of MCHS for a fee. We also offer tours of the museum. These tours can be for a single person or for a group; they include two stories of the building. We are currently working on repairing and remodeling a section of the second floor and hope to have it available for touring soon. The programs and events mentioned above take place either at the Old Jail Museum or the McKean County Courthouse. Our advertisements specify the location of the program/event. Staff at the museum includes volunteers and individuals involved in the PathStone program. We sometimes offer internships and also allow students to complete their senior projects at the museum.

American Legion Posts 138 and 976 with VFW Post 2497 in Smethport and Crosby along with the Sons of the Legion, American Legion Riders, and their Auxiliaries have joined in a project to create and deliver masks to those in need, so they meet the State guidelines requiring all persons to wear a mask in public spaces. These project masks are not N95 compliant, and when worn along with social distancing will help protect others you come in contact with.

The plan is to determine who is in need of a mask. After volunteers have created the masks, members of the Post, Sons of the Legion, and American Legion Riders will deliver them. Because of the economic struggles caused by this pandemic, there will be no charge for the mask. However, we do need volunteers to cut out and sew the masks. Donations will be accepted to offset the cost of materials but are not expected.

If you are interested in volunteering and using your sewing skills to make masks, please send an email to [email protected]. Put VOLUNTEER in the subject line. Include your name, address, and phone number in your message. We will contact you and arrange to deliver the materials needed to make the mask and then pick them up when completed.

Any person in need of a mask should send an email to [email protected] and put NEED MASK in the subject line. Please put your name, address and phone number in your message. We will contact you to arrange delivery.

Any other Legion or VFW Post in the county that is interested in joining in this effort should contact Bart Barton, Adjutant, Post 138.

The Town-wide Yard Sale was listed as one of the museum's 2020 programs. We plan on participating when the Chamber of Commerce reschedules.

Please stay safe.

Smethport's Annual Town Wide Yard Sales are cancelled for this year.

The sales were scheduled for May 1-2.

This is due to Governor Wolf's order to avoid public gatherings, unnecessary travel and businesses.

The Smethport Area Chamber of Commerce is sorry for any inconvenience.

Arts on the Island

Happy 4th of July from the McKean County Historical Society. Here is another photo taken last Saturday. The lumniaries are visible on the bank of the island to the right of the fireworks. Thank you again to all that supported the museum by purchasing the luminaries, the volunteers that assembled and sold the luminaries, Stephanie Keifer for suggesting the project and the Smethport Fire Department for another spectacular fireworks display

Here is a photo of the island taken shortly after the fireworks. A big thanks to all of the volunteers that helped assemble and sell the luminary kits and to those that setup, light and remove them on Sunday morning. A special thanks to Stephanie Keifer for presenting the idea at one of the first "Arts on the Island" planning meetings.

And, a very special thanks to all those that purchased and decorated the luminaries. Your support for our county's museum is appreciated and you helped make the island and the Smethport Fire Department's fireworks a spectacular event.

Please share. We will be selling the remaining luminaries at the lake tonight before the fireworks.

Surround the Island at Hamlin Lake Park
A Luminary Community Art Project
Because of inclement weather last Saturday, the “Luminary Community Art Project” sponsored by the McKean County Historical Society to surround Hamlin Lake Island with luminaries was postponed to this Saturday, June 30th. We will be on the island by 7 pm setting luminaries out and selling them, price is $3 each. If you have purchased kits already, please bring them to the Old Jail Museum by Friday, June 29th before 4 pm., or bring them to us at the island on the 30th. Each kit provides a white bag, sand and a candle. They may be left plain or decorated, can be made in memory or honor of a loved one. On Saturday you may place them at marked spots around the island. We will start lighting them at 8:30 pm., and they will burn for 4 to 5 hours.

The fireworks are always spectacular, but this special tribute will last even longer.
