This is one of MCSL Museum Assistant John Taylor's favorite photos in our collection. in 1960, Senators Margaret Chase Smith and Lyndon B. Johnson were interviewed by Harry W. Flannery on Washington Reports to the People regarding the postal and government pay increase bill. LBJ was known as a persuasive politician, and his powers were on full display in this photo.

The National History Day National Contest is well underway in College Park, MD. For those who do not know, button trading is a huge deal among students as they try and collect one from each state and international affiliates throughout the week. State Coordinator and Library staffer John Taylor worked with colleagues and former NHD students for this year's design to celebrate America's 250th. They decided to focus on broken barriers. Of course, Senator Smith is represented as the first woman to be elected to both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Others depicted on the button include the first Black Maine State Legislator Gerald E. Talbot, and Louis Sockalexis, who is often identified as the first Native American to play baseball in the major leagues.

MCSL staffer and National History Day State Coordinator John Taylor is headed to College Park, MD to spend a week with nearly 3,000 middle and high school students as they compete at the NHD National Contest. Fifty-two of those students are representing Maine, and many are pictured here! Wish them luck as they compete against the best of the best throughout the country and internationally next week!

We would love for you to join us for the opening reception of "E Pluribus Unum: Maine Artists Interpret a Nation"! This event will be on Thursday, June 11th, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM at the Margaret Chase Smith Library.

This event is free and open to all; enjoy complimentary refreshments, and brief remarks will be given. "E Pluribus Unum: Maine Artists Interpret a Nation" is a juried exhibition which features the work of nine Maine artists who work across a range of disciplines. In celebration of the United States' 250th anniversary, this exhibition attempts to capture the complexity of America – its founding and its defining ideals. It also centers Maine in that complicated and ongoing conversation.

The exhibition will be on display at the Margaret Chase Smith Library from June 11th to August 7th. We hope to see you there!
