Saturday's ceremony has moved. Because of the rain forecast, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Battleship South Dakota Memorial at HAMRE HALL on the AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY campus. The Sioux Falls Municipal Band will perform at 10 am, with a ceremony at 11. This is free and open to the public.

The fiftieth anniversary celebration of Battleship South Dakota Memorial is getting closer. The Sioux Falls Municipal Band opens the festivities Saturday morning, September 7, with a concert. A commemorative ceremony follows. The public is encouraged to attend the free event. Several crewmembers who served on BB-57 during WWII will be present.

The USS South Dakota Ride Across SD began this morning at Battleship South Dakota Memorial in Sioux Falls. J & L Harley provided new Harleys for the SSN-790 crew members to ride, in addition to the sailor riding the USS South Dakota motorcycle. Legion Riders and others joined the group for the two-day trip to Mitchell, Pierre, and Sturgis.

A visitors' bench to honor the memory of US Navy Captain Dave Witte has been installed at Battleship South Dakota Memorial. Come on down, explore, and sit on the bench in the shade.

Join us in Yankton tomorrow at noon to commemorate Armed Forces Day and the 75th anniversary of the loss of USS Scorpion during World War II. Three U.S. Navy captains will be guest speakers. Captain Clark, former commanding officer of USS Florida, will speak on the submarine fleet. Captain Bodenstedt (retired) will discuss the new USS South Dakota (SSN 790) and Captain Diekman (retired) the earlier USS South Dakota (BB 57). The ceremony will be held at the USS Scorpion Memorial near the Meridian Bridge. In case of rain, it will move to VFW Post 791 at 209 Cedar Street.

Open for the summer! Battleship South Dakota Memorial opened this morning, and will be open every day until the end of September, from 9:30 to 5:30. Admission is free. Come in and look around.

These letters mark the beginning of Battleship South Dakota Memorial, when Senator Francis Case and Congressman Ben Reifel joined with the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce to obtain components from USS South Dakota and build a memorial to BB-57 in Sioux Falls.
