A HERO OF THE TOMBSTONERS: Poppy Shell of Silverton is a theater costumer with over 30 years experience making costumes for live theater. She is self-taught and enjoys turning ordinary clothes into wonderful costumes as well as sewing costumes from scratch. She worked on Kauai for decades making costumes for dozens of musicals and plays. After returning to Silverton she became involved again with our local theater Brush Creek Playhouse - where she is on the Board and runs the costume shop for their shows. Some of the costumes for the Tombstone Tales are on loan from Brush Creek, as they were last year. Poppy is the proud mom of five wonderful people and grandma to 12 great grandkids. She urges people to support live theater and attend a play or musical!

Just a reminder that I plan on being at the museum tomorrow at 3pm to finish adding items to the time capsule and to have a public sealing event. Attached is the letter of instructions that will be included in the capsule to the citizens who open it in the year 2076. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for editing it.

If you have additional items to add, please bring them to the museum before Sunday at 3. We have lots of room in the container. I’d like this is to a photo opportunity that we can use to continue to promote our museum so please spread the word and bring family, friends and anyone else you can think of. We will also be drawing the winner of the gift basket during the same time.

In celebration of the America250 anniversary, the Silverton Country Historical Society is looking forward to the next generation of history-makers! We are officially inviting all local students to share their vision of tomorrow in our youth essay contest:

Silverton 2076: Visions of Our Future

We want to hear your unique perspective on how our community might evolve, innovate, and thrive over the next half-century.

The “History in the Window” Walking Tour

To celebrate the United States 250 year Semiquincentennial, the Silverton Country Historical Society has created a “Walking Tour” of Silverton’s historic Downtown core. Sponsored by Business Owners, our historic downtown becomes a virtual museum, with storefronts displaying large-scale archival photos of their buildings from the early days with “Then & Now” placards. This way, we connect the modern economy to Silverton’s timber and trade roots.

🚨 THE CASE OF THE MISSING BICENTENNIAL FLAG: A 50-Year-Old Silverton Mystery! 🚨

Silverton history buffs and community members, we need your help to right a decades-old wrong just in time for a major milestone!

Cast your minds back to July 1976. The nation was celebrating the Bicentennial, and the owners of our local Coast to Coast store generously donated a beautiful, historic Bennington Colony Bicentennial flag to the City of Silverton.

It was proudly raised high above the old police station... but its time in the spotlight was short-lived. Just a couple of weeks later, someone pulled off a daring (and highly illegal) midnight heist and stole it right off the flagpole!

Fast forward to today: July 2026 marks exactly 50 years since that flag was donated to our town.

Whether it was a legendary teenage prank, a spur-of-the-moment dare, or it’s just been sitting in a box in someone's attic or garage for five decades—we want it back, no questions asked!

Let’s bring this piece of 1970s Silverton history home in time for its 50th anniversary. If you know where it is, or if you happen to have it, you can drop it off at the Silverton Country Historical Society museum or even City Hall. We just want the flag safely returned to the community it belongs to.

As so many of our volunteers are mothers and/or have mothers, we will be closed on Sunday, May 10, in their honor.

We are still open tomorrow, Saturday the 9th. Come by and see our lovely display of handmade vintage quilts, lovingly created by Silverton women in the past. 💕
