The Shippensburg Station A multi-use event space at the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail trailhead in historic Shippensburg, PA. Home of the Cumberland Valley Railroad Museum.

Shippensburg Station is a multi-use event and performance space that will be taking shape over the coming year at the new Cumberland Valley Rail-Trail trailhead at the corner of Fort and Earl Streets in historic Shippensburg, PA. Shippensburg Township and the Shippensburg Rotary Club have jointly funded a comfort station that is now open. In addition to a Pennsylvania Railroad signal, and other railroad artifacts that will be on public display, the centerpiece of the site will be a restored 1956 railroad boxcar that once carried freight on the local line for the Penn Central railroad. The boxcar was moved to the site in early October and will be restored over the fall and winter. A museum is under development for the interior of the boxcar, which will be connected to the rail trail by a deck that will serve as a stage for musical and other performances. The goal is to have the site completed by mid-April 2018 in time for a planned TrailFest featuring art exhibits, bands, local w**e, b**r and c***r and series of races on the trail. The SCPRA is in the process of helping to extend the rail trail from Ship Station to Orrstown Road.

Director Josh Mitchell, who oversees the project for the Park Authority, said — “phase 1 of this vision is getting closer to completion. Thanks to the determination and hard work of a lot of people we’re hoping final design and engineering will conclude soon.”

The trail extension will add another 1.3 miles of pedestrian pathway for users of the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail, heading in a south-west direction.
