Artist Bio:
Hello friends, I'm Pops and here is our story. I met Matilda “Tillie” Whiteside in 2025 and we fell in love, married, and discovered we both thrived on being creative and making art. Pops & Tillie Studio was born. I am a retired businessman and had wanted to be an artist since high school. In 2015, after 45 years of chasing money as a retailer and consultant, I retired, enrolled in art school, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with magna cm laude honors. My much younger fellow students affectionately nicknamed me "Pops" and I embraced my new moniker as my artist’s name. Sculpture, charcoal drawings, collage and artist sketchbook journals were my mediums in my first artistic endeavors. Teri, my previous wife who suddenly passed in 2024, was a prolific quilter and had taught me to quilt. My style is very improv and funky as I created framed art quilts to hang on the wall, or more artistically...” quilts beyond the bed”. In recent years I began taking commissions for hand painted custom pet portraits. I have completed over 200 for Pops Patrons and numerous landscapes featuring iconic views of North Carolina. I use a variety of styles of painting to suit my client's preference: Pop Art, Modern Impressionist, or Realistic.
My creative and vivacious wife Tillie has experienced life as a dedicated public servant, a happy homeschooler of 6 children, a top tier Mary Kay Consultant, and a thriver after cancer! Together we are living life to the fullest in our golden years as we pursue our God-given dreams. We believe the best is yet to come and are launching Peaceful Place, a non profit with the mission of helping men and women discover themselves after living with abuse. Artistically, Tillie has developed her own style which she calls “Tillie’s Tiny Threads”. These small, framed art quilt creations are amazingly created from tiny scraps of fabric and embellished with Sashiko, buttons, & rickrack. When Tillie goes to her Happy Place, her Singer Featherweight in our studio, she returns with another little jewel for Pops & Tillie Studio proving that even the scraps of life can come together in a beautiful way. Join us today on our artistic journey as we create and share the love!
