Join us Wednesday, September 2, from 5:30–6:30 p.m. for a conversation with Miciah Stasis Harding Miciah Stasis, a traditional tattoo practitioner, wampum artist, and quill worker from the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts.

Harding will explore the history of tattooing among Northeastern Indigenous peoples and her work to revitalize traditional tattooing practices as a way to reconnect with ceremony, storytelling, language, healing, and kinship.

The lecture will be followed by an audience Q&A, with optional interactive elements. Free for Members or with Museum admission. Registration recommended.

Looking for a creative way to spend your Wednesday evening? 🎨

Join us for After Hours Artmaking: Creative Space for Teens and Adults from 5:30–7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 26.

Gather in a casual, comfortable setting to make art inspired by the Museum’s special exhibition “On Point: Needlework from the Garthwaite Family Collection.” Educator Kat Redniss will share insights about the exhibition, and Associate Conservator, Awyn Rileybird will guide you through creative needlepoint activities based on techniques and creative choices made in the exhibition. Perfect for teens and adults looking to relax, connect, and get creative!

Young artists and their families are invited to create art inspired by this year’s outdoor sculpture exhibition, Carl D’Alvia: (mono)LITHS. D’Alvia’s sculptures slouch, sprawl, or flop—they seem to breathe with personality and movement, engaging in a playful dialogue with the Museum’s historic architecture, gardens, and collections. Bring your imagination, and we’ll bring the supplies, guidance, and enthusiasm!

A new masterpiece has arrived at Shelburne Museum!

We’re thrilled to announce the acquisition of a remarkable portrait of William Seton, painted by celebrated American artist Gilbert Stuart between 1793 and 1798.

Seton was a Scottish-born merchant and Loyalist during the American Revolution. Stuart, one of America’s most celebrated portrait painters, is best known for his iconic portrait of George Washington—the image featured on the $1 bill.

Generously gifted to the Museum from the estate of Seton’s great-great-great-granddaughter, Mary Seton Abele, this important portrait is now on view in the Webb Gallery.

Notice Seton hanging opposite John Singleton Copley’s portrait of John Scollay, a Son of Liberty. Together, the two portraits offer a fascinating look at opposing allegiances during the founding era of the United States.

A love letter to Shelburne Museum—in porcelain. 💙

Renowned ceramic artist Mara Superior has created a stunning new platter inspired by beloved treasures from our collection, including the steamboat “Ticonderoga,” the Chelsea swan tureens, an appliqué quilt block, and a wooden mermaid weathervane. Rich with intricate detail, the work celebrates the Museum’s history, creativity, and the enduring legacy of founder Electra Havemeyer Webb.

See it now in the Ceramics Gallery at Variety Unit, then join Kory Rogers, Francie and John Downing Senior Curator of American Art on Wednesday, August 19 at 5:30 p.m. for “Shelburne Museum on a Platter: Mara Superior’s New Collection Plaque” and discover the stories behind this extraordinary work.

Join us for Educator Morning, a free workshop on August 7 from 8:30–10:30 a.m.

Designed for PreK–12 educators in Vermont, New York, and New Hampshire, you’ll get special early access to exhibitions, “Norman Rockwell: At Home in Vermont” and “Varied & Alive: New and Rarely Seen Treasures from the Collection,” before the Museum opens to the public. Museum educators will introduce Thinking Routines—simple, adaptable strategies that encourage observation, discussion, and critical thinking across grade levels and subject areas.

You’ll leave with practical classroom resources, new ideas, and inspiration for the year ahead. Light refreshments included!
