Happy Memorial Day🇺🇸

On this day of remembrance, we are highlighting items from World War 1, known at the time as the Great War.
The framed photo is of Company H., 20th Regiment, Mass State Guard, at Camp Augustus P. Gardner, August 1918.
The pin is an example of pins given by the towns of Buckland and Shelburne to their returning service members after the war.

On this day, we remember all the soldiers who died in service to our country.

Anyone a true crime fan? On today’s episode of the hit podcast My Favorite Murder, Karen Kilgariff covers the story of Elizabeth Packard, a pioneering woman in the field of mental health advocacy. Elizabeth’s husband Theophilus was from Shelburne, where the couple married. Theophilus and his father (also Theophilus) were early ministers in town. After moving to the Midwest, Theophilus disagreed with Elizabeth’s religious views, and had her institutionalized in an asylum. Elizabeth went on to expose the horrors she saw inside, and affect change in laws across the Midwest.

CALLING ALL GENEALOGISTS!! We need your input on our upcoming exhibit!
Hello, I’m Mahalia (Collections Manager at SHS). I am researching for our exhibit on the Revolution and I need your help. I am trying to finalize the list of Revolutionary soldiers from Shelburne. We are down to the last few, whom I’ve sourced from Shelburne cemetery records. Are you descended from one of these men? Please let me know if you know whether he was in the Revolution.

On a foggy Friday, two of our staff went to Hill Cemetery on Old Village Rd. to survey the graves of Revolutionary veterans from Shelburne. We had a successful outing, and the fog really made the place atmospheric.
