Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art

Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art The MGMoA features art spanning 8,000 years of human history and many world cultures

Founded in 1919, the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is one of the oldest museums in the state of Oklahoma. Father Gregory Gerrer, for whom the museum is named, was a Benedictine monk of considerable artistic talent. During Father Gerrer's travels to Europe, Africa and South America, he collected objects of artistic and ethnological value. The museum's permanent collections include Egyptian, Greek and

Roman objects; art from the Renaissance through the early 20th century; and large holdings of Native American African/Oceanic and Eastern cultural artifacts. In addition, the museum offers exciting special exhibitions throughout the year.

Museum After Dark was AMAZING!

You showed up, explored the museum after hours, participated in our community pond art project, adopted even more art, and—most importantly—had FUN! ❤️

Seeing so many people creating, laughing, enjoying the galleries, and supporting the museum is exactly what we hoped that night would be.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out and made Museum After Dark such a special evening. We can’t wait to do it again!

Today, the art world says goodbye to one of its most recognizable and imaginative artists, Yayoi Kusama, who passed away at the age of 97.

While the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art does not have any of Kusama’s works in our collection, we had the joy of introducing our community to her life, her art, and her wonderfully colorful world through one of our Art Mania program.

Her iconic polka dots, pumpkins, bold colors, and endless imagination inspired generations—and gave our young artists a chance to learn that art has no limits.

This is exactly why programs like Art Mania matter. A museum doesn’t have to own an artist’s work to open the door to their story and inspire someone to create.

Thank you, Yayoi Kusama, for a lifetime of seeing the world differently. ❤️🔴🟡🟢🔵

“Nothing to do in Shawnee…” 🤔

Hmm… we might have to disagree! 😉

Just look at our MGMoA Events Calendar! The museum has something happening EVERY MONTH through the end of the year — and this doesn’t even include all the community events we’ll be part of around Shawnee!

📍 Pedal Palooza Bike Festival 2026 — September 19 at 10 AM at Rotary Briscoe Boy Scout Park with our Pogo - Pottawatomie Go friends
🍂 Fall Festival at Woodland Veterans Park — October 12 at noon
…and there’s plenty more to come!

For the big and small, young and young-at-heart, artsy and not-so-artsy — there’s a place for everyone at MGMoA. ❤️

Come take a class, enjoy a special event, bring the kids, try something new, explore the galleries, or simply spend some time surrounded by art and history.

You are ALL welcome.

🐟 Leave your mark on 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗸.

Your $10 Museum After Dark ticket doesn't just get you into the museum—it gives you the chance to create something that will become part of MGMoA.

During the evening, you'll create your own clay fish, and after Museum After Dark, your creation will find a new home as part of a display in our courtyard!

No art experience required. Make it beautiful. Make it weird. Give it personality. Just make it yours.

Then, the next time you visit MGMoA, you'll be able to find the little piece of 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗸 that you left behind.
