Tolson's Chapel is full of the ambitious, inspiring, and profound stories of people who sacrificed and labored to educate themselves and their children after being released from enslavement in the wake of the Civil War. It represents a pivotal piece of our nation’s history, the Reconstruction Era, that has been called America’s “Second Founding.” Learn more about African Americans and Education during Reconstruction and some of the chapel members and teachers who transformed their lives here: Hilary and Christina Watson, David B. Simons, and John J. Carter.
