Scott County Historical Society is a 501(c)3 nonprofit museum, historic house, and research library with a mission to search, save, and share Scott County history. Located in downtown Shakopee since its founding in 1969, SCHS serves the entire Scott County community by preserving information and making it available through professional collection practices, engaging exhibits and educational outreach programs for people of all ages.

August 28th celebrates National bow tie day. There are some fabulous bow ties (and pictures of them) in our collection. Here we have a photo from Julius Coller's University of MN ball with many of the gentleman sporting bow ties. We also have a bow tie from a girl scout uniform from the 1960s and one from Dan Patch Days.

It's the day to celebrate the fun-loving fur-friends in our loves with National Dog Day.
We have a few City issued dog tags like this one from 1958 which belonged to the Coller family in our collection. Belle Plaine's Leo Albrecht involved his dogs in his dog an pony show act with his circus. LeRoy Lebens also took portraits of a number of dogs like this one.

We dove into the collection for something with the same date as today but a different year and we found a Woman's Relief Corps certificate dated August 24th, 1914. This belonged to Flora Logenfeil of Shakopee, who served with the Woman's Relief Corps/Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic. Flora died in 1916 just after her 21st birthday. She's buried at the Valley Cemetery.

Today recognizes the invention of the radio with National Radio Day. Radios in the home had a profound cultural impact - it was a way to quickly spread information but included those who could not read. It also was a new form of entertainment - a scheduled radio show, a friendly voice, and music!

Your fun-fact of the day is that the 1930 Federal Census asked whether or not your household had a radio. This question showed much more than just whether or not someone had a radio - but that's another story for another day 🙂

One radio from our collection was actually won by Maurice Stans. This radio receiver, won by Maurice Stans when he was 15 years old, is made of a cardboard cylinder wrapped in copper wire which is mounted on a square piece of wood. The cylinder is topped by a round pice of wood which has brass controls and terminals mounted on top. The receiver has a pair of headphones attached to it. This is currently on display at SCHS if you'd like to check it out in person.

Today is National Sons & Daughters Day and we have many photos in our collection of siblings. We randomly picked 3. We have Maurice and Loretta Stans (who grew up in the house next to Scott County Historical Society), the three Ediger siblings of Belle Plaine and Donald and DeWayne Strehlow of Shakopee.

We just wanted to give everyone a friendly heads-up, this upcoming Saturday (August 15th) our Research Library will only be open from 10:00am - Noon due to the program (Making Countless Memories) which will be held in that space starting at 1:00pm.
The remainder of the Historical Society & Museum will be open regular hours (10:00am - 3:00pm). Thank you for understanding!

As we look at the remainder of 2026 and ahead to 2027 we would love to have your input on a few things - so we are going to be asking for your opinions on here over the next few days.

Our first two questions will look at programs/events. We want to plan things when the most people can make it and we want to plan things that you all are interested in attending 😀

Today we are wondering, if you were to attend a program or event at SCHS....would a weekday (during the day), weekday (evening), weekend (during the day), or weekend evening work best?

It's National Bowling Day - who doesn't love a good game of bowling! There are many bowling alleys across the county and many bowling teams between the high schools, businesses and organizations! You can always check out our website (Search the Collection tab) and find more. But here are a few items from the collection. We have Pat Donnelly's pin from when she played on the New Prague High School bowling team in 1954. We also have a photo of the Rock Spring Bowling team from 1951 featuring John Lynch, Al Johnson, Henry Workman, Neil Kline, and Bill Wermerskirchen.
