Learn more about Dakota culture in our public exhibit, “Mdewakanton: Dwellers of Spirit Lake”. Owned and operated by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.

Hoċokata Ṫi is the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s (SMSC) cultural center and gathering space that will be used to interpret and encourage traditional Mdewakanton Dakota cultural heritage, language, and history by sustaining this inherent knowledge for SMSC Members through exhibitions, preservation, and education.

In conjunction with the Minnesota Education Association break (October 15-17), educators are invited to Hoċokata Ṫi - Cultural Center and Public Exhibit to explore Native history and culture.

Hoċokata Ṫi is also honored to host acclaimed Ojibwe historian, author, and educator Dr. Brenda J. Child on October 16 for a special presentation of her new book, In Our Own Words: True Stories of Indian Boarding Schools. Advanced registration is required.

Visit the Mdewakanton: Dwellers of the Spirit Lake public exhibit to see a new addition installed earlier this summer. This woven ribbon dress was created by Leah Thomas, an enrolled member of the Prairie Island Indian Community.

Thomas handcrafted the dress for the 2025 Hoċokata Ṫi Fashion Show and its theme, Ṫate: The Wind Guides Us. Through its palette of varying blue tones representing the sky, the thoughtfully crafted piece embodies the spirituality of the Dakota belief system. The woven ribbons that form the body of the dress symbolize the wind and its connection to all living beings, reflecting its role as a guiding and unifying force within the natural world.

Hoċokata Ṫi is honored to host acclaimed Ojibwe historian, author, and educator Dr. Brenda J. Child on October 16 for a special presentation introducing her new book, In Our Own Words: True Stories of Indian Boarding Schools. The book brings together firsthand accounts, letters, and historical records that illuminate the experiences of Native children and families affected by the federal Indian boarding school system. This event is recommended for educators, school leaders, and community education partners who work with middle and high school students. There are two sessions to choose from, 11am and 1:30pm. The presentation costs just $20 and everyone in attendance will receive a free copy of the book and a certificate for two continuing education credits. In conjunction with MEA break, educators are invited to experience the Mdewakanton: Dwellers of the Spirit Lake public exhibit with free admission from October 15-17, 2026. Educators visiting the exhibit will receive a certificate for one continuing education credit. The immersive exhibit tells the story of the Mdewakanton Dakota people through audio and visual interactive elements—tracing the history from existence before European settlers to making treaties with the U.S government, as well as the journey to self-sufficiency. We are proud to share that Hoċokata Ṫi celebrated our 7th anniversary this month! Since 2019, we have welcomed over 52,000 guests into our exhibit as well as thousands of attendees to our many public events such as CommUNITY Day, Waniyetu Art Markets, Hoċokata Ṫi Fashion Shows, Earth Day Celebrations, Dak̇ota Iapi Akiċiyapi (Dakota Language Bowls)—including the first ever hosted by the SMSC, and more. We’ve grown over the years from a staff of 6 on opening day to 20 today (some staff not pictured). Thank you to all who have visited, we hope to see you again soon!
