Artworks Gallery Announces Juried Photo Show
The Seneca County Arts Council’s Artworks Gallery juried photo show will open November 6. Entries are due Thursday, October 29 through Saturday, October 31, during gallery hours, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show will run from Friday, November 6 through Thursday, December 3. The show opens with a public awards reception on Friday, November 6, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. with food and refreshments provided. The Artworks Gallery is located at 109 Fall Street in downtown Seneca Falls.
Entry fees are $10 for students, $25 for members and $35 for non-members. Entries must be ready to hang: matted and framed with wire. All entries are to have artist’s name, phone number, title on back and price. Size limits, 12X18. Entries must be original work. The Gallery will receive a 25% commission on all work that is sold.
Prizes to be awarded are Overall: Best in Show $100, Student: Juror’s Choice $100, Honorable Mention $50 each; Novice: Juror’s Choice $100, Honorable Mention $50 each; Advanced: Juror’s Choice $100, Honorable Mention $50 each. A People’s Choice vote will go on during the duration of the show. The winner of People’s Choice will receive a membership for 2027 which will be awarded at the end of the show in December. The application to enter this show is available on our website www.artsinseneca.org or at the gallery.
Juror for the show is Elissa Davidson. Elissa, is a professional photographer for over 20 years. she specializes in Lifestyle Photography. She says, “I love to capture every moment, from family portraits, engagements, maternity portraits, bar/bat mitzvahs, sweet sixteens, and especially weddings!” Elissa is the co-owner of It’s A Wonderful Scoop, the ice cream store in downtown Seneca Falls, with her partner David Goldberg. Winners of the photo show will be invited to display their work in their store.
Seneca County Arts Council (SCAC) supports the arts in the local area through its art workshops, art shows, gallery space and a scholarship program. Artworks Gallery shows the work of member artists, photographers, handcrafted jewelry, pottery, blown glassware, knitted and assorted crafts. Interested in becoming a member? Workshop Description: Fall colors are an inspiration for landscape painting. Learn the basics of painting autumn landscapes by applying various composition principles, watercolor techniques, and types of landscape compositions to create colorful fall scenes.
Materials Provided by Participant: watercolors paints (if using tube paints, do not use paints that say tints), brushes, 140lb. watercolor paper, board larger than the paper size for stretching the paper, tape, paper towels, water container, and a photo of scene to be painted.

Workshop Description: This four week class focuses on the various layering and shading methods used to blend colored pencil strokes (including linear stroke, overlaying colors, scumbling, impressing, glazing, burnishing, colorless blending pencils), removing, wax build-up, and various finishing methods. Please note that each class builds upon the previous one.
Materials Provided by Participant: drawing paper or pad, set of colored pencils including white, grey, and black (Prismacolor brand recommended), eraser, pencil sharpener, and a colorless blending pencil.
Materials Provided by Instructor: information packets and photos that can be used for inspiration.

Workshop Description: Oil pastels are soft oil based sticks that can be easily blended with swabs, tortillons, fingers, and Baby Oil to create realistic works resembling oil paintings. They can be worked from light to dark or dark to light. The focus of the class will be using various drawing and blending techniques to create textures and three-dimensional form.
Materials Provided by Participant: set of oil pastels, a regular pencil, and an eraser. If desired, bring photos of landscapes.

The Artworks Gallery offers two Saturday workshops in October with Roberta Nelson. Charcoal Still Life will be held on Saturday, October 10 and Oil Pastel Landscape on October 17. Both workshops are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshops will be held at the Artworks Gallery, 109 Fall Street in downtown Seneca Falls.
The October 10 Charcoal Still Life workshop covers how charcoal is made by firing willow, vine, or other twigs at high temperatures in air-tight containers. The medium comes in three grades; soft, medium, and hard. Charcoal is much softer and darker than pencils. The workshop will cover how charcoal is applied using various drawing techniques. Different values are created by using different grades and by the amount of pressure applied. Participants need to bring a set of charcoal pencils in 3 grades: soft, medium, and hard, drawing paper or pad at least 11”x14”, soft eraser or kneaded eraser, and a regular pencil. The instructor will provide information sheets, blenders, and still life images. Register by October 4.

Artworks Gallery Offers a Four-Week Series of Basic Watercolor Painting Workshops
The Artworks Gallery offers a four-week series of Basic Watercolor Painting Workshops with Roberta Nelson on Fridays, October 2 through October 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. The workshops will be held at the Artworks Gallery, 109 Fall Street in downtown Seneca Falls.
Roberta explains, “This four-week series of Basic Watercolor Painting workshops is for those who have never used watercolors and would like to try the medium. It is also for those who have used watercolors and just want to refresh their skills. It is intended to impart an understanding and application of the fundamentals in the use of watercolors. It includes presentations, discussions, and hands-on exercises in the following areas: painting surfaces, types of brushes and their effects, stretching the paper, watercolor pigments, watercolor washes, blending colors, removing color, watercolor painting methods, and special effects.”
For the first class, participants need to bring a set of tube watercolors (do not buy sets or tubes labeled tints), and several watercolor brushes in various sizes, a water container, paper towels, pencil, and eraser.

Artworks Gallery Offers Street or City Scene Workshop
The Artworks Gallery offers Street or City Scene Workshop with Roberta Nelson on Saturday, September 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Artworks Gallery, 109 Fall Street in downtown Seneca Falls.
Roberta asks, “Were you ever interested in drawing street or city scenes but didn’t know where to begin? The focus of the class is learning how to draw buildings and houses in parallel perspective. You will learn how to create a front and side view of a street or city scene, which can then be finished with any medium of you choose.” Participants need to bring drawing paper or pad (9”x 12” or larger), pencil, eraser, ruler larger than 12”, and any finishing materials desired (paints, inks, colored pencils, etc. and their related materials).
Cost is $40. Register by September 5. To register for the workshop email [email protected].

Artworks Gallery Offers Traditional Watercolor Landscape Painting Workshops
The Artworks Gallery offers Traditional Watercolor Landscape Painting Workshops with Roberta Nelson on Thursdays, September 10 and 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. The workshop will be held at the Artworks Gallery, 109 Fall Street in downtown Seneca Falls.
Roberta says, “The workshop focuses on the traditional method of watercolor painting, also known as glazing. The superimposed wash is the foundation for the traditional method of watercolor painting. The paint is applied in a series of flat or graded washes superimposed from light to dark to create desired effects. The lightest color wash is applied first; the medium is applied over it; and the darkest applied over the medium. The top wash will determine the final effect.”
Participants need to bring a set of watercolor paints (do not buy tube colors that say tint), brushes, cold pressed 140lb. wt. watercolor paper 9”x 12” or larger, a board larger than the paper to stretch the paper, masking or painters tape, water container, paper towels, pencil, eraser, and photos to use for subjects.
Cost is $20 per workshop. Register by September 1. To register for the workshop email [email protected].
