Daum permanent collection spotlight: take a look at one of our most recently acquired pieces!

"Milk on the Tongue", by Amy Meissner, consists of fifty-four pieces of artwork made of vintage crocheted potholders, embroideries, abandoned crazy quilts, glass and plastic craft beads, and Swarovski crystals. Displayed as an entire set, each piece depicts a tongue shaped protrusion that is attached to a crocheted potholder or piece of fabric.

Alaska-based artist Amy Meissner combines traditional handwork, found objects, and abandoned textiles to reference the literal, physical, and emotional labor of women. She describes "Milk on the Tongue" as rooted in her experience breastfeeding two children for nearly four years. More than a decade later, the work returns to an alternative form of repetition and production through material exploration of the mundane and the value assigned to this kind of labor (www.amymeissner.com).

"Milk on the Tongue" is currently available to see in our exhibition "Inhabit", which is open until August 23, 2026.
