The Music of Asian America Research Center, in partnership with Seattle’s Wing Luke Museum, will host “Sound Check! A Festival of Asian American Music, Sound, and Scholarship” from the evening of Saturday, April 27 to Monday, April 29.

The hybrid in-person/virtual festival will include concerts and artist talks by Asian American musicians, and research presentations by scholars, musicians, educators, and community organizers.

The program committee invites proposals for research presentations on any topic related to Asian American music. We particularly encourage proposals that are related to Seattle as a place of Asian American musicking and the roles of Asian American memory institutions.

As we look to 2024, we are deeply excited to grow abundantly in our commitment to Seattle as placekeepers, to our histories and our futures as stewards, and to each other in care. Consider helping to ensure our community efforts with a year-end gift or by working alongside us as a volunteer -- your contributions matter.

We thank you for the ways that you’ve held us thus far and look forward to holding others in care for future generations.

“I just see the museum as that home base, that home for me to continue growing and to continue giving back to this Community that has welcomed me so much. I feel like it's because I've been working there, that I've been able to be educated on that and find my place and my home and my people—so I want to do what I can to tend to those people, and I already know that they're going to look out for me, too.”

This GivingTuesday join us in giving voice to the stories, cultures, and art of AANHPI communities like this experience from our Volunteer Coordinator, extraordinaire, Milly!

“In terms of institutional spaces and museum spaces, I never, never have seen my Cambodian self in a museum, unless it’s literally museums in Cambodia that have to do with the genocide. When it comes to Cambodian Americans, there’s a perception from people outside the community where all they really know is about the genocide. All they really know is about that suffering...the museum offers this opportunity for people to learn and to know [what] this ever-changing community looks like.“

By giving to the Wing Luke Museum, you are working with us to make these moments together for the future.

My twin sister is on the left. We called my grandmother Longyi Granny since she only wore longyis. Wing Luke Museum presents a unique walking tour of Seattle’s former US Immigration & Naturalization Service (INS) building. To understand the race-based immigration landscape of today, immerse yourself in the stories of those who lived through the very beginnings. Retrace the paths of Seattle's immigration history from Chinese settlers and laborers, Japanese American community leaders imprisoned in 1942, to the Southeast Asian refugees navigating a new country in the 1980s.

November is National Family Caregivers Month, which shines a light on the 48 million+ caregivers in the US caring for their loved ones independently. Nearly 40% of caregivers identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color. COVID-19 has tremendously impacted family caregivers tending to the needs of their own children alongside the needs of their aging parents and full-time and part-time jobs. Caregivers from AANHPI communities are usually more reluctant to use professional and governmental services, taking on caregiving responsibilities alone.

We encourage investment in local and national caregiving organizations and community programs. Organizations such as AARP provide caregiver resources for financial and legal issues, care at home, health, and more.

Local organizations like the ICHS PACE program at Legacy House aid caregivers in the Seattle area including language interpreters and health insurance navigators.

Our friends at Seattle Arts & Lectures will host the acclaimed author of "The Sympathizer" and "The Refugees", Viet Thanh Nguyen, on Wednesday, November 8 at Town Hall Seattle. We are thrilled to be community partners on this event!

Join Nguyen as he continues to dethrone racism from the Western canon with his latest, A Man of Two Faces, a radical memoir that shows the realities and nuances of the way we share histories. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. (PT) and can be attended either in-person or online. Audience members will have the chance to submit questions for Nguyen during a Q&A moderated by filmmaker and award-winning journalist, Thanh Tân.

Tickets start at $10. Purchase your seats here: https://lectures.org/event/viet-thanh-nguyen/

With insight, humor, formal invention, and lyricism, Viet Thanh Nguyen rewinds the film of his own life in A Man of Two Faces. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sympathizer, Nguyen expands the genre of personal memoir by acknowledging larger stories of refugeehood, colonization, and ideas abo...

In this episode, Institute of Museum and Library Services Director Crosby Kemper explores Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) history and culture in Seattle beginning with a visit to the Wing Luke Museum. Established in 1967, Wing Luke Museum is a museum that focuses on art, history, and culture of Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Hawaiians; it is the only pan-Asian community-based museum in the US. After a museum exhibition tour with current director Joel Tan, Crosby meets with recently retired director Beth Takekawa and author Lawrence Matsuda for a discussion of the resilience of Japanese Americans during the internment of World War II. Then, former Washington governor Gary Locke shares about his own Seattle roots and the history of the city's Chinatown-International District before a visit with Bettie Luke, the youngest sister of Wing Luke. Bettie discusses her brother's legacy in the community and her own lifetime spent working for social justice concerns.

We look forward to partnering with AARP to support our arts and culture programs and to support racial & social equity for elders, AARP members and their families, and our broader community!
