Chatwin Arts is pleased to present the group exhibition Shifting Light, presenting work by Galen Ballinger, Dana Blume, Zhanpei Fang, Don Gray, Matthew Harkleroad, Jordan Horton, Guinevere Johnson, Jordan Kee, Morgan Patten, Oscar Pearson, Grayson Richter, and Brandon Vosika.

As summer gives way to fall, Shifting Light explores transitions both seen and felt. This exhibition highlighting expressionist works reflects the changing seasons and evolving social, urban, and environmental landscape of the Pacific Northwest. Together, the artists offer unique perspectives on transformation, adaptation, and the enduring power of light.

Shifting Light will be on view September 3 - 26, 2026, with an opening reception Thursday, September 3 from 5-9pm.

After he received a Guggenheim grant and worked in Rome for 3 decades, James Leong moved to Seattle in the 90s with his wife. After arriving, Leong began to feel a major shift as a Chinese-American artist living and working in Seattle.

"I never really felt Chinese until I came to Seattle. It is so multicultural and you are not forced to take a stand. In one sense, it has made me feel more American than i felt before. But more importantly, there was no Chinese closet to come out of. I came back as a mature artist and the struggle of youth has been mitigated."
- James Leong in Asian Art News, November/December 1994
