Studio 103 in the Tashiro Kaplan (TK) Building in Seattle's Pioneer Square area is an artist run working studio and gallery space. Resident artists Zeynep Banu Alev, Lorri Falterman, Joy Hagen, Leslie West and Claudia Zimmerman share this space with rotating monthly exhibits of their works in encaustic, oils, photography, print media, and sculputre. “I find myself noticing lines everywhere—the sweep of a crane against the sky, the markings of a soccer field, a trail leading toward the water or the structure of a bridge.” Studio 103 welcomes our newest resident artist, Lori Lieske. “Throughlines” grew from that curiosity about the visual connections that exist across the places we move through. Using line, color, shape and collage, Lori’s works explores the ways built and natural environments intersect, overlap and shape our sense of place.

For artist, Germain Mitacc, obsessions arise from deep desires of dreams, longings and private imaginings that surface in moments of vulnerability. At times, these thoughts are difficult to silence, and the hope that they might become real can turn inward affecting his sense of balance and well-being. What begins as a search for comfort also becomes a source of creative energy. These recurring thoughts help him return to meaningful memories and to people whose presence he do not want to lose to time. They draw him back to moments of missed opportunity, where he begins to imagine different choices and alternative paths his life might have taken. Ultimately, he seeks to transform these intense patterns of thought into creative expression, giving shape to feelings that might otherwise remain unresolved.

THE ALCHEMY OF CLAY

Introducing one of our new resident artists, Joann Wadge: The Alchemy of Clay is a quiet ritual of metamorphosis, where raw earth is refined by the rhythm of the hand and subjected to the fire of the kiln. In this collection, I explore the transformative process of turning earth-bound clay into organic forms that echo the natural world. My work is a dialogue between the structured geometry of a flat clay slab and the unpredictable fluidity of hand building. I allow the slabs to retain their organic memory—revealing soft undulating curves, raw, textured edges, and a gentle tension that mirrors natural landscapes. This body of work is a celebration of the elemental shift from soft, wet mud to a permanent, resonant ceramic. These pieces are intended to bring a sense of geological time, quiet contemplation, and natural beauty.
