Studio 103 in the Tashiro Kaplan (TK) Building in Seattle's Pioneer Square area is an artist run working studio and gallery space. Resident artists Zeynep Banu Alev, Lorri Falterman, Joy Hagen, Leslie West and Claudia Zimmerman share this space with rotating monthly exhibits of their works in encaustic, oils, photography, print media, and sculputre. OCTOBER AT STUDIO 103

“FOUND IN TRANSLATION”

“I’ve moved between different worlds for most of my life, and it’s taught me to recognize that movement in other people. Their worlds may be completely different from mine, but there’s something intimate in that recognition without ever having to name it.”

Through layered abstract paintings, Jyotsna translates the experience of moving between worlds into overlapping visual systems. Forms cross boundaries, patterns interrupt and reshape one another and fragments disappear and return changed. “Found in Translation” is about the new fluencies that emerge at the edges of different worlds.

“I find myself noticing lines everywhere—the sweep of a crane against the sky, the markings of a soccer field, a trail leading toward the water or the structure of a bridge.” Studio 103 welcomes our newest resident artist, Lori Lieske. “Throughlines” grew from that curiosity about the visual connections that exist across the places we move through. Using line, color, shape and collage, Lori’s works explores the ways built and natural environments intersect, overlap and shape our sense of place.

A glance between friends, a hand on a shoulder, a shared memory, the comfort of belonging, the quiet presence of a tree - these connections, both visible and unseen, weave through our lives and shape who we become. Artist Magali Lenarczak presents a collection of works depicting human figures and natural forms that echo off one another, revealing a world built on relationships and interdependence. Each painting is an invitation to explore the threads that unite us with one another, with our memories and with the living world that surrounds us. For artist, Germain Mitacc, obsessions arise from deep desires of dreams, longings and private imaginings that surface in moments of vulnerability. At times, these thoughts are difficult to silence, and the hope that they might become real can turn inward affecting his sense of balance and well-being. What begins as a search for comfort also becomes a source of creative energy. These recurring thoughts help him return to meaningful memories and to people whose presence he do not want to lose to time. They draw him back to moments of missed opportunity, where he begins to imagine different choices and alternative paths his life might have taken. Ultimately, he seeks to transform these intense patterns of thought into creative expression, giving shape to feelings that might otherwise remain unresolved.
