The Everhart Museum has been engaging visitors with natural history, science, and art since 1908.

The Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science & Art is a non-profit museum located in Scranton, Pennsylvania’s historic Nay Aug Park. The Everhart is the largest public museum in Northeastern Pennsylvania, founded in 1908 by Dr. Isaiah Fawkes Everhart, a Scranton-area philanthropist and ornithologist. Dedicated to the education of its visitors in the disciplines of science, history, culture, and art, the Museum houses humanities and fine art collections as well natural history collections containing fossils, birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, minerals, insects, shells, and herbaria. With more than a dozen galleries, the Museum offers something for everyone to enjoy. Special exhibitions featuring objects and artworks from the Museum's collections and on loan are regularly curated in-house; and traveling shows designed by outside artists and institutions are frequently hosted. Multi-generational programming focusing on the Museum's collections and special exhibitions is offered year-round.

📬 Happy World Post Day! 🌎💌

Today we are celebrating the history of mail and the fascinating ways people have connected across distances for generations. World Post Day commemorates the founding of the Universal Postal Union in 1874, which helped bring countries together through an international postal network.

Our collection features a fascinating assortment of vintage stamps from countries including France, Greece, Belgium, Italy, and the United States. From historic landmarks and landscapes to portraits and colorful commemorative designs, each stamp offers a little glimpse into the past.

Now it’s your turn! We’d love to keep the tradition of sending mail alive, and we want YOU to be part of it! ✉️

Join us next Wednesday, October 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. as we host a special event celebrating our current exhibitions 𝘏𝘶𝘣𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘛𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘦: 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘝𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦, which closes next Sunday, October 18, and 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘈𝘣𝘰𝘷𝘦: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰-𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘦𝘳, which is open through November 15, with a spacey musical spectacular featuring The Olde Stories!

Featuring Jason “Louis XIV” Smeltzer (reading, theremin, eurorack), Ron Stabinsky (piano, organ, synth), and Doug Smith (upright-bass), The Olde Stories storytelling performance group will regale us with the stories "Somnium" ("The Dream") by Johannes Kepler, and "Der Mond" ("The Moon"), a traditional German fairy tale collected by Brothers Grimm.

This event is included with general museum admission ($10 Adults, $5 Seniors/Students & Kids Free) and includes light fare. No registration is necessary.

This project is supported by a Lackawanna County Community Arts and Culture Grant.

🍂 What a day! 🍂

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the fifth annual Rakin’ in the Fun Community Day this past Saturday, October 3. We welcomed nearly 600 visitors to the Everhart Museum for an afternoon filled with creativity, community, and plenty of fall fun! 🎃

From pumpkin painting and crafts to community activities, live music from DJ Cowgirl Pills, a rocks and minerals sale, and free admission to the museum, there was something for everyone to enjoy. We even had delicious treats from Chanito’s Ice Cream!

A huge thank you to our volunteers, community partners, vendors, and everyone who helped make this year’s Rakin’ in the Fun such a success. We’re so grateful for our amazing community! 🍁💛

On , we celebrate the enduring legacy of Peg McDade (1937–2025); a Scranton native, master fiber artist, and beloved mentor whose impact continues to inspire generations of creators. 🧵✨

Peg’s lifelong connection to the Everhart Museum began with her first solo exhibition here in 1982. A true master of weaving, she crafted works that she proudly declared were always “woven by hand.”

She brought that same devotion and energy into every classroom she stepped into.

Today, we honor her remarkable dual legacy as both a creator of vibrant, textured fiber art and an educator whose warmth and wisdom deeply touched our community.

🇺🇲 With the Traveling Vietnam Wall and the 'Cost of Freedom Tribute', a nationally-travelling mobile replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., returning to Nay Aug Park now through the Sunday, it’s the perfect time to stop at the Everhart while visiting to see the new exhibition 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦, on view through December 27!

The works in this gallery highlight artists from the Everhart’s collection who dedicated a portion of their lives to military service. Upon completion of their service, each individual turned to visual art as a creative outlet for reflection, healing, and self-expression. We honor their extraordinary contributions both in service to our country and in the creative sphere.

This riveting piece, entitled 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘩 𝘏𝘶𝘯𝘵, was completed by WWII Navy veteran and Scranton native Tom Olenchak in 1964, who gifted it to the Museum that year. Following the war, Olenchak studied at the National Academy of Design in New York, where he earned top honors, and moved to New Jersey to work as an artist for the New York-based company Nocrosss Greeting Card Company.

His artistic journey came full circle with solo exhibitions in 1959, 1964, 1977 and 1982 at the Everhart, where he had studied natural history, science and art in his youth.

☕ Happy National Coffee Day! ☕

This 1800s coffee pot may be beautiful, but it’s definitely not one you’d want to drink from!

Even in the 1800s, highly decorated, varnished pots like this were typically made for decorative purposes rather than brewing coffee. Coated with a tar-and-bitumen-based varnish called asphaltum, and often containing lead in their soldered joints, such pots could leach harmful substances when heated and exposed to the acidity of coffee.

They were sometimes used as tabletop serving pitchers once the coffee had cooled a bit, though, with the coffee brewed separately in a more practical kitchen vessel.

Beautiful to look at, but best left on display!

This bold watercolor by Priscilla Longshore Garrett (1907–1992), titled 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩'𝘴 𝘊𝘢𝘧𝘦́ ☕, offers a stylish take on a little part of Scranton’s history.

In the 1940s, Balish’s Café, also known as Balish’s Saloon, was a beloved neighborhood gathering place on South Seventh Avenue in Scranton’s Bellevue section, a community built around the anthracite coal industry. Owned by Ukrainian immigrant Daniel Balish, a former coal miner, and his wife, Mary, the cafe was a popular morning stop for local miners, who gathered for breakfast before their long shifts. The Balish family lived above the cafe, where they raised their 10 children.

🍂 Happy Fall! 🍂

As much as we love summer, we’re excited for the autumn with cooler, crisper days and the soon-to-come reds, yellows, and oranges of fall foliage.

In a few weeks, Northeastern Pennsylvania will look much like this beautiful portrayal of a nature scene in Elmhurst, PA by one of our favorites, John Willard Raught! 🎨
