Matthew Ulrich is a largely self-taught artist whose early art education included studying with Scott Graber and Robert Chappel at Wilson High School in Reading, Pennsylvania. He continued to develop his style through experimentation and instinct, creating without the constraints of traditional artistic rules.

His work explores the darker, more surreal sides of the human experience. Distorted figures, faces, hands, and creatures intertwine with layered bodies in complex compositions that move between the recognizable and the unsettling. Bold colors and dramatic contrasts give his paintings a sense of movement, while deep shadows and expressive brushwork heighten their emotional intensity.

Ulrich is drawn to themes of struggle and identity, exploring fear, connection, and the complexity of the human mind. Rather than beginning with a fixed idea, he allows each painting to develop organically, following the imagery that emerges as he works. His compositions invite viewers to look deeper, discovering new faces, figures, and meanings within the chaos.

For Ulrich, art is less about following a formula and more about discovering what lies beneath the surface.

We couldn’t have asked for a better way to break in the gallery dance floor! Our silent disco with Scranton Fringe Festival brought such incredible energy to Globe Gallery. There’s something special about letting loose and moving together surrounded by art.

A huge thank-you to Scranton Fringe Festival for organizing the night and to the DJs for keeping us dancing! To everyone who joined us, thank you for bringing that energy into our space. We loved every minute.

Nate Holden is a local artist and a graduate of Marywood University. He is a painter who likes to express the introspective aspects of his own life and journey through pieces of art that, although unique to his own experience, hopefully resonate with viewers in a way that allows them to develop their own unique relationship with a piece of artwork.

Finding beauty in the painful parts of one’s story and channeling that pain into something creative is a gift that he cherishes above all else, and one that gives him hope to continue on his road of recovery.

John Fitzsimmons has been doing this for sixty years. Every day he stands in front of his work and asks: What does he paint? How to paint? And why paint? He eventually realized that the only question he cannot ask is, “Why paint?” because he must do so as a matter of faith and need.

He uses the human figure as a vehicle. His work is not representational in that it is not the model’s story, and he does not draw the line between abstraction and realism in the generally accepted way.

This body of work is graphite on plywood prepared with several coats of gesso. He can get a very dark mark and can erase and manipulate the graphite with alcohol and scratching with a scribe or sandpaper.

His painting, drawing and intaglio printmaking are interconnected but address different sides of his interests. He often scratches back into his paintings to refine edges and add detail.

Regarding “beauty,” that is, aesthetics or the impulse to make art—his own and universally—he sees two human concerns. One is our impulse to continue, which is fertility, eroticism, and youthful beauty. Versus mortality, which is the sublime, death, our place in the universe, God and gods.

He has worked full time in his studio in the Delavan Studio Building in Syracuse since 2013.

Recent exhibits of his work include solo shows at Chamot Gallery in Syracuse, Fitton Gallery near Cincinnati and the Hallway Gallery in Syracuse. Upcoming shows include a solo show at the Clocktower Gallery in Rochester and the Loomis Gallery in Mansfield, PA, along with group shows.
