Huntington Homestead Museum The Huntington Homestead Museum is the birthplace of Samuel Huntington. (l731-1796).

Huntington Homestead Museum in Scotland, CT is the birthplace of Samuel Huntington, one of four CT signers of the Declaration of Independence, first president of the United States in Congress Assembled, and Governor of CT 1786-96. He was two time president of the 2nd Continental Congress, l0 time Governor of Connecticut and first president of the United state under the Articles of Confederation Ra

tified. His homestead is located in an area of CT noted for its patriotism during the Revolutionary War. He was confidant of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and other notables of that period. The march of Rochambeau, General of the French troops runs past Huntington's front door on its way to combine forces with George Washington. The homestead is restored to reflect continuous occupation from 1720 to l995.

We're grateful to the 11 participants of our inaugural hearth cooking classes and their instructor Becky Hendricks for helping to make this program a success. Drawing from nearby towns like Windham, Hampton, and Canterbury, as well as from Scotland, and as far away as Killingworth, Norwich, and Hebron, the group thrived in each of their two-classes. As a result, they were well-prepared to take on the upcoming Thanksgiving feast with confidence. We're excited to hopefully offer this opportunity again in the spring, so stay tuned for details on our next session.

The Huntington Homestead is sponsoring a hearth cooking class featuring Becky Hendricks. We have 2 spots available, so if you've ever been interested in learning how to cook in an open hearth, now is your chance! The date and menu will be mutually agreed upon. If you're considering preparing Thanksgiving dinner in your own open hearth, please contact us now to get ready!

The class will start in the morning (the exact time will be determined) and will include a fully prepared hearth and beehive oven. Each participant will have a role in the cooking process, and by 3 PM, you'll be ready to sit down and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

There is a $75 fee for this class, and once the menu is finalized, the cost will be split among the participants. To sign up or for more information, please contact us via Facebook, Instant Messaging, or email us at [email protected].

Well, we’re on the home stretch with the exterior painting project. With the scraping, priming (a translucent primer), and minor repairs made to some trim and clapboards complete, Redwood Painting LLC is applying the first of two finish coats, and our historic site is poised to shine for next year's programs. This milestone marks the perfect opportunity to express our gratitude to everyone who contributed to our programming this year and to those who attended. We're thrilled to report that this year has been our most successful to date, setting a high standard for the future. As we look ahead to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we're eager to capitalize on the momentum. With Samuel being one of four signers from Connecticut and the only birthplace of a signer open to the public, we're confident that our visitor numbers will be better. If you're inspired by what we do and would like to assist or share an idea, we invite you to join our monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at the Scotland Fire Dept conference room at 4 pm. We're building on our successes, and there's never been a better time to get involved!

Just a reminder of our last open house program of the year. The fires are burning in preparation of Becky Hendricks cooking for us today. If you ever wondered about cooking in a beehive oven, today’s the day you need to visit and ask her any questions you may have about it. We are also listed as Walktober Walk # 170 with the Last Green Valley’s events for today. 11am to 3pm, house tours also available!

Today, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Distinctive Tree Care crews and the CT DOT Roadside Vegetation Management team for their exceptional work at the Homestead property. The intricate tree removal at our entrance, which preserved a nearby healthy maple tree and carefully avoided a commemorative plaque, was truly a remarkable feat. The operators' skillful maneuvering of their equipment was a testament to their expertise, rivaling the precision of operating room surgeons. By removing diseased trees and retaining select healthy maples, they have beautifully restored our property's historic charm. Their outstanding work adjacent to the Rochambeau campsite just east of the Windham Center historic district had already set our expectations high, and they have exceeded them. A tip of the tri corner hat to a job well done!

As we enter October, we want to remind you that there are only two open house programs left. This Saturday, we will host another America 250 event. The Ye Olde Lebanon Towne Militia will be camped at the Homestead, providing a glimpse into what life was like for Revolutionary War soldiers during the Siege of Boston from April 1775 to March 1776. A slideshow presentation on the Siege will take place at 1 PM, and the hearth will be glowing all day with colonial-era dishes!

Typically, our open house dates occur on the first and third Saturdays from May through October, with next week being one such Saturday. However, in preparation for Redwood Painting LLC's exterior painting of the Homestead in October, we must address a few preliminary "fixes." The window and door sill in the Hall will be replaced shortly, and given the age of the house, there may be potential unforeseen issues once these elements are exposed. Consequently, we have canceled the open house tour this Saturday, August 16. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but if you have visitors who are only in town for this coming weekend and are willing to skip the Hall, message us and we will accommodate you with a modified tour. We are also hopeful that any unexpected discoveries will be minor, as our September 6 Women of the Revolution program must proceed as scheduled.
